Being able to calculate the distance to objects in the car allows SM to to several other safety/convenience tasks that other lesser competitors only have to offer:

- ZF use time of flight cameras to verify that the seatbelt is infront of the "lazy" American who hates seatbelts - so that the airbag timing can be adjusted to stop the OEM being sued.

Eyeris - use their 3d mapping to work out if someone has left their child in the car so that it can remind them.

Since the car interior is mostly fixed, you can see if items are on top or in front of the seats (and footwell if there are extra cameras in different locations) just by noticing that the distance is shorter than the reference image. Now you can alert the driver, or turn off the airbag on the passenger seat if the thing is not an adult and could be a child in a rear facing seat.

Emergency Assist combines the functions of Lane Assist and ACC in a new assistance system. As soon as the sensors detect no steering, braking or acceleration activity on the part of the driver, the system activates various escalation stages. Initially, the system attempts to wake the driver by steering jerks and finally an emergency stop is initiated. The hazard warning flashers are activated automatically and the car completes some slight steering maneuvers to draw the attention of other road users to the hazardous situation. ACC prevents collisions with the traffic ahead. Finally, the system brakes the vehicle continuously to a standstill.

If you pause the screen on the speedo, you can see that the adaptive cruise control is enabled and the car is set to 50 Km/h. aka 30 mph

I made notes, but lost the message.

From about 15 mind, they are talking about AV testing. They use 2 engineers on closed track so no BdMS. Then onto DMS and handover systems. Brief mention of SM. When quizzed on DMS he says torque based systems then goes on to flash Lidar, to see if the driver is wearing a seat belt. So no competition there.

Sorry R - I was listening while running about doing everything else. But you can hear that Alex is getting ready to talk about Seeing Machines, tries to be generic, then goes for it. ZF guy dodges the question, thinks about talking about alternatives then remembers that Alex knows what he is talking about - so he uses the English is not my first language ploy - so pretends to misunderstand and answers a different question.

I didn't get to the end, so I will go back and try again later.

Thanks Whatf, unfortunately you have proved that the number of installers hasn't changed in the last ~6 weeks (and they are remarkably consistent with the installations). When we have to support all of the trucks in Europe, we will need to get more installers on board an get that graph curving upwards

and we are still falling.
