Tactical move widens Seeing Machines’ moat

I think the Devant collaboration announced on the 20th June is a tactical move to widen Seeing Machines’ (AIM: SEE) moat. The data derived from real-life driver experience, known as its ‘river of gold’ has hitherto protected its AI-fuelled technological lead. Now it will be augmented by a sea of computer-generated edge cases from Devant, a specialist in synthetic data generation who is focused on the niche area of in-cabin monitoring.

This should help Seeing Machines speed up the development of DMS and future in-cabin monitoring applications that are being demanded by the industry and regulators, putting Seeing Machines even further ahead of its competitors.

Far from an admission of weakness, this move demonstrates that Seeing Machines is doing all it can to maintain its leadership position — without breaking the bank. I don’t envisage any competitor overtaking SEE within the next 3 years. Indeed, part of me wonders if we might not end up acquiring Smart Eye or Cipia eventually. However, I’m betting Seeing Machines gets acquired within 2 years.

Auto RFQ delays

I appreciate the lack of auto OEM contract wins being announced has rattled many of us. I think it is entirely down to OEMs waiting until the last possible moment to decide how sophisticated a DMS/OMS to use, in the light of tighter EuroNCAP regulations that are coming into force in 2026 but which still haven’t been totally tied down.

This has been confirmed to me following conversations with people at EuroNCAP — sadly, I find myself curiously unable to obtain basic information from official SEE channels following scoops that have upset some people. (But, like a would-be lover suffering from unrequited love, I am still fully invested in this brilliant company).

Q. When do you expect them to be published?

A. 2026.

Q. What exactly is the process for their iteration and publication? Is a draft put around to the industry players for comment? If so, at what stage are they currently?

A. Currently under development, discussing the new requirements and test provisions alongside industry.

Q. Have they been delayed, if so why?

A. Initially considered for 2025, we finally decided to switch to a 3-year cycle, so starting their implementation from 2026. This was to allow sufficient development timing for protocol development and giving industry sufficient headroom for technology adoption.

Q. What provisions regarding driver monitoring are they likely to include and how advanced are they likely to be? (I know there is a roadmap but I’m not sure about the precise details of it and how it applies to driver monitoring).

It's an idea that could mark a pretty revolutionary change for vehicle safety: What if our cars could prevent drunk driving?

The recent infrastructure law included a provision mandating that, starting in a few years, all new cars must include some sort of technology to detect and prevent drunk driving.

Some companies were already racing to figure out how to do this. Now, it's going to be required.

"I actually think this particular technology could save more lives than airbags," says David Harkey, the president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. "We're talking about more than 10,000 people that are losing their lives annually as a result of alcohol-impaired driving in the country."

So how might this technology actually work?

The new law doesn't specify, but there are a few approaches that been explored in recent years. They fall in two main categories: systems that measure your blood alcohol level while you do normal driving tasks, and cameras that watch for tell-tale signs of drunkenness.

Cameras could monitor for signs of impairment

Another option would be to bypass measuring blood alcohol levels directly, and instead look for signs of impairment using cameras.

This is the approach that Volvo has said it will take for future vehicles; the company tells NPR that the technology will be rolled out in the next couple of years, but would not provide any more specifics.

Sam Abuelsamid, principal analyst with the market intelligence company Guidehouse Insights, says the great advantage of this approach is that it can use cameras that many automakers are already installing in their vehicles.

work is underway with collins aerospace, whom seeing machines struck an exclusive intellectual property licensing agreement with in may. plans call for collins to develop the cameras and other avionics required to install the seeing machines technology in ****pits. initially, the software would only monitor pilot performance, but seeing machines believes the technology could one day be modified to interact directly with the flight controls. in one such scenario, automation could be prompted to take control of the aircraft if the software determines a pilot is incapacitated or unaware of an imminent danger.

europe is moving forward with regulations that only require one pilot in the ****pit for long-haul flights. the rest of the world could follow suit.

Following a bus safety roundtable with federal ministers in late August, the Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) has released a safety initiatives paper to tackle challenges in the industry.

On August 28, BIC presented the paper at the roundtable hosted by senator Carol Brown.

The paper provides eight key recommendations to further enhance bus safety, centring on the vehicle, passenger and other road users.

The paper broadly captures three main outcomes, calling for an uptake of new technologies, an education of the community about bus safety through national campaigns and enhancing the ability to background check drivers.

Key recommendations include adopting event data loggers for investigations purposes to align with European regulations and adopting intelligent speed assist systems into new vehicles in alignment with European regulations.

The paper also calls for a fast-tracking o vehicle replacement programs that incorporate new technology such as electronic stability control, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.

The paper mentions implementing a national harmonised approach to bus safety awareness aimed at both educating schools and the general public, as well as reviewing ADR 68 to clearly state seat belt requirements and removing anomalies such as removing standees on buses equipped with seat belts and increasing warning devices to see uptake in seat belt usage.

Finally, the paper is investigating the feasibility of introducing seat belts on new route service buses, reviewing the level of obtainable information for driver employment checks and continuing driver fatigue reforms through law reviews and checking out driver fatigue monitoring systems.

Why the need for a fatigue detection device?

According to The Times of India, two recent incidents led the airline to draw focus on the issue of pilot fatigue and alertness. On August 17, an IndiGo pilot who was preparing to operate a flight collapsed and passed away at Nagpur airport. During the same week, a senior Indian pilot, while on board a Qatar Airways flight, fell ill and subsequently passed away. Owing to these incidents, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Indian aviation watchdog, decided to conduct a review of pilot fatigue data that it has collected during spot checks and surveillance of airlines to see if regulations related to flight duty times or fatigue need to be changed, as per Reuters.

How will the device work?

According to the press release from IndiGo, the programme will utilise real-time data, historical records and predictive analytics, with all collected data undergoing de-identification. The airline is planning to conduct a proof-of-concept trial for its technology-driven interface to assess pilot alertness levels in the coming months. Following its completion, they will jointly assess the effectiveness and precision of the gathered data. However, the airline does not intend to replace its existing fatigue risk management process. It will continue to encourage pilots to self-assess and report fatigue, file fatigue reports, and request relief from duty as necessary.

According to ANI, the programme, which has been developed after six years of extensive research, involves the analysis of specific flight patterns, with no video recordings being generated during data collection. The insights drawn from this data will guide determinations regarding pilot schedules, rest intervals, and overall duty rotations. Pilots will opt to employ the Thales ground device voluntarily to evaluate their alertness levels, dedicating a maximum of five minutes both before and after each flight.

Volvo has pledged to resolve the often frustrating nagging of driver attention monitoring technology with the new Driver Understanding system, which makes its debut on the upcoming EX90 electric car.

The system uses two interior cameras to monitor a driver’s eye patterns and detect early signs of distraction from the road. Similar set-ups are deployed in many new cars – as mandated by the GSR2 safety regulations coming into effect next year – but these are often too sensitive and so become a distraction.

Volvo aims to resolve this by using proprietary technology to scan eye-gaze patterns – for drowsiness, intoxication or other cognitive impairments – and applying a more pragmatic approach to the data gathered by the system.

DETROIT – Ford, Cadillac, GMC and Jeep all unveiled new designs and technologies at the North American International Auto Show, which kicked off Wednesday, Sept. 13.
