A few weeks ago, BMW announced updates and pricing for its 2024 lineup in the USA, and now the company has shared another list of autumn 2023 updates that apply to various models.

These updates were issued by the BMW headquarters in Germany initially, but as is often the case, many of the changes here can be expected to reach models sold in North America. In this era of remote updates and the continued digitalization of our cars, most of the changes are software-related. Still, there are also some styling changes for the 5 Series, i5, and 7 Series sedans.

Let's look at what's on offer in more detail, and bear in mind that we won't detail any upgrades already published by BMW North America.

Initially announced in the first quarter of this year, the QuickSelect functionality for the latest BMW iDrive infotainment system has gradually been rolling out to various models. It was already announced for the X1 M35i arriving next month, and BMW now says that all X1s will have the feature from November 2023.

This rapid-access technology features a new menu structure that makes it easier to access commonly used functions without getting lost in a submenu. The X1 also gets BMW Operating System 9 from November, after initially being launched with iDrive 8 in the USA. Operating System 9 is based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack for the first time. Benefits include the availability of more digital content and shorter function update cycles.

Most models with iDrive 8.5 will be able to receive the latest in-car gaming and video streaming services from autumn 2023.

Debuting in Germany alongside Operating System 9, Digital Premium consists of a customized selection of gaming, music, and video streaming services. It also arrives in November 2023 on the X1, along with models not sold here, like the iX1 and 2 Series Active Tourer.

This option is available via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. In Germany, both monthly and annual subscriptions will be available for this service, with the latter being €99 (around $120). The AirConsole gaming platform announced previously forms part of Digital Premium, with ten initial titles, including racing and skill games. BMW Digital Premium in the USA includes the Video App with access to portals like TED, Al Jazeera, and Bloomberg Television.

BMW Digital Premium includes new My Modes to customize the driving experience. They are Expressive, Relax, and Digital Art. In certain regions, customers can pay parking fees directly from the vehicle in compatible parking zones, while the cloud-based navigation system includes 3D visualization of buildings.

Airbus has pitched two new freighters to FedEx that would leverage having fewer pilots on board, Aviation Week has learned.

The more radical proposal is an A321F that would be type-rated for two pilots at the outset but would attain single-pilot approval over time, documents seen by Aviation Week suggest. The second concept is an A350F approved for EMCO—essentially permitting one pilot on the flight deck during low-workload cruise portions of the flight, which could lead to needing fewer pilots on long-haul flights that require relief crews under current regulations.

looking further at bus driver fatigue and

distraction, as well as drugs and alcohol.

We will assess the potential for fatigue

detection technology, which identifies

if a driver is drowsy or distracted, and

issues a warning to the bus operator.

Fatigue detection technology aims to

help reduce fatigue-related incidents and,

importantly, support a more open culture

within the bus industry on managing

fatigue. We will also investigate the

potential for alcohol interlocks and drug

detection to be introduced on vehicles,

which require a driver to blow into a

breath-testing instrument before the

vehicle can be used

Working with bus operators, we will

continue to develop our workstream on

fatigue management. A key focus will be to

build on the 2019 Loughborough University

study to understand the nature and extent

of bus driver fatigue through trialling

fatigue detection technology on buses.

Bus operators have undertaken smaller

trials of fatigue detection technology,

which have provided important insight

on the potential of this technology as

well as on the process of engagement

and follow-up with bus drivers following

a fatigue incident, which encourages

an open and supportive culture around

fatigue management.

We will complete a larger trial on up to

450 buses over 12 to 18 months. This will

enable early detection and intervention

if fatigue is experienced, and improve our

understanding of the extent of fatigue

incidents and their contributory factors.

The trial will help to evaluate the potential

for this technology on new buses through

the Bus Safety Standard.

An ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union against the Detroit automakers, including Ford, was not expected to directly impact sales much during the quarter.

Next month could be more challenging due to the strikes, however, especially for vehicles such as the Ford Bronco SUV and Ranger midsize pickup – the first vehicles for the automaker to stop production due to the strikes, which began Sept. 15.

Only 25,200 workers, or roughly 17% of UAW members covered by the expired contracts with GM, Ford Motor and Stellantis, are part of the work stoppages.

The UAW has been gradually increasing the strikes since the work stoppages began, after the sides failed to reach tentative agreements by Sept 14. The targeted, or "stand up," strikes are taking place instead of national walkouts in which all plants simultaneously strike.

National strikes affect the companies more quickly. The targeted walkouts aim to preserve the union's funds and prolong the work stoppages to keep the automakers off keel.

Ford reported Wednesday that it sold 500,504 new vehicles in the United States in the July-September period, up from 464,674 in the same period last year. The gains were reported a day after much of the rest of the auto industry reported higher Q3 sales.

At the start of September, new-vehicle inventory was 68% higher than in 2022, according to Cox. Incentives have been up, too.

Meanwhile, Ford sold 20,962 electric vehicles in the quarter, up 14.8%. Hybrid sales of 34,861 vehicles were up 41.4%, led by F-150 and Maverick hybrid sales. Ford reported that sales of the F-150 hybrid were up 46.9%, and that the hybrid model now makes up 56.5% of all Mavericks sold.

Internal combustion engine vehicle sales of 444,681 were up 5.4%. Year to date, Ford's sales are up 9.2% from the first nine months of 2022.

In The News: Ford Motor Company has announced the F-150 Lightning Flash, which expands on the popular XLT model. Top features include an extended-range battery with a targeted EPA-estimated range of 320 miles, available BlueCruise hands-free highway driving, and a standard 15.5-inch touchscreen.

Ford's comprehensive Tow Technology package is also standard, along with a wireless charging pad, and a power tailgate.

"The F-150 Lightning Flash is a direct outcome of engaging with and learning from our customers," said Marin Gjaja, Chief Operating Officer, Ford Model e. "This truck combines many of the technology-forward features our customers love in our EV lineup, at a more accessible price."

The F-150 Lightning Flash starts at just under $70,000 and will be available for customer ordering in early 2024.

meanwhile, in the exhibition space for sponsors, bae systems has brought along the latest public demo of its augmented reality ****pit concept for gcap/tempest. this has now been enhanced and updated since it was first revealed with a map that can be toggled in the ar space from a 2d to a 3d isometric perspective. this can be tilted, rotated and zoomed in and out – with contacts clicked on to bring up further information. this ar ****pit though is not just iron man-like visual interfaces, say bae, but will also include biometrics, awareness, eye tracking and stress monitoring of the human part of the system. personalised for each individual, this will allow the aircraft to take over some of the core functions should it sense the pilot getting overwhelmed or task-saturated.

GM CEO Mary Barra recently announced that the automaker would continue to manufacture the Bolt, most likely using the Ultium battery platform. Currently, Bolt models use the BEV2 battery platform, an acronym for Battery Electric Vehicle 2.

Conlin says sales of the vehicle have jumped at the Austintown dealership and GM is looking for a lower cost vehicle that would introduce entry-level buyers to the EV market. “We’ve been doing very well selling Bolts,” he says.

The automaker has not released a date for the newly redesigned Bolt EV and EUV, Conlin notes. He’s hopeful, though, that the new models could be available within a year. “They’re saying that the process would be a lot faster since it’s not a complete redesign,” he says. “It’s more of a refresh, like a mid-cycle enhancement.”

This particular Bolt EUV is a fully loaded model, equipped with a power sunroof, a seven-speaker Bose sound system, and Super Cruise – a tool that keeps the vehicle in its proper lane and remains at a speed set by the driver. When Super Cruise is engaged, the driver is able to travel with his hands off the steering wheel.

“It will also keep the distance from the vehicle in front of me,” Conlin says. “If that vehicle would stop, then this one would stop as well.”

The vehicle can also detect whether the driver is paying enough attention to the road, Conlin says. “If I was to look away for an extended period time, the green light on the steering wheel would start to blink,” alerting the driver.

General Motors’ third-quarter vehicle sales increased 24% compared to a year ago.

GM said it sold 555,580 vehicles from July through September, up from 447,000 a year earlier.

The Detroit automaker on Monday said it sold 555,580 vehicles from July through September, up from about 447,000 a year earlier, when sales were depressed due to Malaysia-related supply issues of semiconductor chips. The increase was in line with or higher than industry analysts’ expectations of an at least 21.6% increase.

Regarding electric vehicles, GM said it plans to increase production of its Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV after the vehicles recorded their best quarterly sales ever at 14,709 units. GM intends to boost calendar-year production for global markets from approximately 44,000 vehicles in 2022 to more than 70,000 in 2023.

Parking garages (known as multistory car parks in the U.K.) are one area where the proliferation of EVs and bigger vehicles is expected to have an impact.

Ford activates its BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving in Spain

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, as well as the DGT, has given the go-ahead for Ford to activate the system in Spain BlueCruise, a type of semi-autonomous driving that allows hands-free driving with your eyes on the road on highways and expressways. The company has confirmed that this technology will be available, for the moment, in the Mustang Mach-E under a monthly subscription.
