Caterpillar's Driver Safety System (DSS) – a department within Caterpillar’s MineStar Solutions group – has an opening for a DSS Customer Support Representative, working in Peoria, IL. The Driver Safety System (DSS) is a technology designed to detect operator fatigue and distraction events, and the system alerts the operator the moment the fatigue or distraction is detected and nudges them back to alertness. The DSS Monitoring Center classifies events from over 250 sites around the globe, and our team intervenes when necessary to ensure operator and mine site safety. As a Monitoring Center Safety Advisor, you will provide safety services on a global scale!

Job Duties:

Analyze critical safety event data and video from an in-vehicle system.

Determine safety event classifications and sub-classifications.

Implement the applicable Fatigue Intervention Plan (FIP).

Contact customers' sites as required by FIP.

Coordinate with peer(s) to ensure consistent operation and application of event classifications.

Perform quality audits of event classifications per the supervisor's direction

Facilitate the completion of tier 1 service tickets as required by the supervisor.

The PM addressed the nation on Wednesday to confirm he would roll back a number of net zero deadlines, including when car manufacturers had been told to remove all fossil-fuelled models from showrooms.

The move has cast doubt over the implementation of the ZEV mandate, which would force manufacturers to sell an increasing share of electric vehicles each year between 2024 and 2035.

However, ministers today said this will still come into force in January, claiming the electric car sales targets for motor firms will be confirmed 'very soon'.

After the next release I would like to see these done monthly instead of 3 monthly as it ramps up.

Magna iam sure is a great system and probably better than Gentex. Considering them & Gentex are 90% of the mirror business we should get 50% of the market there.

Collins surely must start getting some contracts soon. They always seem to be signing deals. Lets Hope SEEs turn soon!!

We haven't won the contracts until there won but we also haven't lost them until we lost them & i dont see others announcing any big contracts.

Have to give benefit of doubt atm. Paul said next 3 months, so needs to deliver know til Xmas to be taken seriously.

Wood's bear case for Tesla

It's important to note that Wood's $1,400 price target for Tesla is her bear case for the stock. She thinks it's likely that Tesla's share price will rise significantly higher than that over the next four years.

Wood does foresee strong sales growth for Tesla's electric vehicles (EVs). However, she told CNBC's Melissa Lee earlier this week that EVs make up only around one-third of Ark Invest's projected valuation for Tesla. The other two-thirds of Ark's valuation is related to autonomous vehicles. In particular, Wood believes that Tesla has a massive opportunity in autonomous ride-hailing, sometimes referred to as robotaxis.

Ark Invest detailed in a report released in April 2023 that Tesla could generate annual net revenue in the ballpark of $200 billion by 2027 from autonomous ride-hailing. Again, that's the bear case.

Question? Can hands free Assisted Driving be safe? Euro NCAP‘s Michiel Van Ratingen, Richard Schram, Adriano Palao and Matthew Avery have been the guest of BMW driving the new BMW i5, trying it’s innovative Driving Assistant Plus. This system offers hands-free highway driving and uses a sophisticated driver monitoring system to make sure you’re attentive at all times. The system also offers automated lane changing with the driver confirming the lane change with a positive look in the appropriate mirror. It works really well and we were impressed with BMW’s cooperative driving concept that offers a seamless shift from hands on to hands free driving and ensures that you are always in control and attentive when the system is operational. Euro NCAP will begin to assess these new hands free systems as part of its Assisted Driving Gradings as they come onto the market over the next few years. We hope all car makers pay as much attention as BMW appear to have. Euro NCAP will tell you….

On the contrary, GM has launched a public information campaign to educate drivers on responsible use of the SuperCruise system.    

Andrew Farah, executive director of advanced driver-assist systems at GM, told The Verge, "You are still the driver of the car. And that's why we don't refer to those systems as autonomous." 

Farah said the nearly 80,000 Super-Cruise-equipped GM vehicles have traveled more than 77 million miles using the technology as of June 9th, and although GM reported a few crashes to the NHTSA involving vehicles with Super-Cruise, in none of those cases, was the system controlling the car at the time of the accident.

Farah said GM would continue to work to make sure GM's system was safe and his company would continue to do what it could to give customers peace of mind. "What I know is that we've made sure we've got a fully tested system," he said, "and we're putting it out there as such, there's no disclaimer to sign ... I can't speak for the other folks."

Items on the screen that are interesting to check out include a battery temperature readout and what appears to be a driver-assist system light. The green steering wheel has a pair of hands around it that appear to signal that the driver’s hands can come off the steering wheel, suggesting that the Boxster EV could get an optional driver assist system that allows for hands-free highway driving. A sensor array in a glossy black panel attached to the steering wheel column gives even more fuel to this theory, as this is a typical look for a driver monitoring system. The upcoming Macan EV is suspected to also feature a hands-free driver-assist system, so it makes sense to see Porsche sharing its tech across models.

Now assessing direct driver monitoring functionality that monitors eye movements for distraction, fatigue and unresponsiveness

From 2023 the five-star threshold for Vulnerable Road User Protection has also increased to 70% from the previous requirement of 60%. Threshold increases for all other star rating levels within the Vulnerable Road User Protection pillar have also been introduced.

The first vehicle model to undergo independent ANCAP safety testing to the expanded 2023-2025 criteria was the battery electric Lexus RZ which has provided a strong demonstration of what can be achieved with modern safety features and technologies, achieving the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.

The Lexus RZ achieved scores of:

87% for Adult Occupant Protection

89% for Child Occupant Protection

84% for Vulnerable Road User Protection

84% for Safety Assist

Score thresholds of 80% (Adult Occupant Protection), 80% (Child Occupant Protection) and 70% (Safety Assist) continue to apply for a vehicle to be eligible for a five star rating in 2023, however the breadth of safety aspects and test scenarios assessed under the new 2023-2025 protocols has expanded, along with adjustments to the distribution and quantum of available points.

Against the new 2023 criteria, the Lexus RZ satisfied the cyclist anti-dooring requirements, demonstrating its ability to warn occupants of an approaching cyclist when exiting both the front and rear doors, and to prevent door opening if needed. Vehicle submergence requirements for door and window opening were also met.

The RZ also demonstrated Good performance in each of the new lane support and autonomous emergency braking scenarios including those with the stationary and braking motorcycle and in intersection turning scenarios involving an oncoming motorcycle.

New Co and using BMW Tech, so hopefully SEE DMS?

Ceer is the first Saudi automotive brand to produce electric vehicles in Saudi Arabia, and will design, manufacture and sell a range of vehicles for consumers in Saudi Arabia and the MENA region, including sedans and sports utility vehicles.

A part of PIF’s strategy to diversify Saudi Arabia’s GDP growth by investing in promising growth industries, Ceer will attract over $150 million of foreign direct investment, and create up to 30,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Ceer is projected to directly contribute $8 billion to Saudi Arabia’s GDP by 2034.

The company, which is a joint venture between PIF and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (“Foxconn”), will license component technology from BMW for use in the vehicle development process.

Foxconn will develop the electrical architecture of the vehicles, resulting in a portfolio of products that will lead in the areas of infotainment, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies.

Each vehicle will be designed and manufactured in Saudi Arabia, and tested to the highest global automotive quality control and safety standards. Ceer vehicles are scheduled to be available in 2025.
