Optimism for 2021

General Motors and Toyota reported strong United States sales at the end of 2020 on Tuesday, Jan. 5, reflecting surprisingly robust consumer demand that mitigated the sales drop for the full year in the wake of COVID-19.

The pair are the top two automakers by U.S. market share and both scored higher sales in the fourth quarter despite notching double-digit sales declines for all of 2020.

GM cited continued consumer hunger for pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and other large cars that enabled the auto giant to score record average transaction prices in the fourth quarter and for the full year.

The auto giant reported a 4.8% increase in U.S. auto sales in the final three months of the year, to 771,323, topping analyst estimates.

To gain the promised efficiency benefits and green profile of hybrid and electric vehicles, it’s important to conduct driveline and component testing during design and manufacturing, specially adapted to the particular nature of these vehicles. Such drivetrains have several features that make testing them very different from the standard testing conducted on legacy fueled systems. For example, hybrid and electric systems use regenerative braking, which typically requires fairly complex AC inverter technology, and often more complex transmissions.

In addition, these vehicles typically have several module control units (MCUs) controlling the functions of such major subsystems as the engine, transmission, and charging system, among others. To properly test these components, the test system needs to be able to communicate with one or more of these units via a high-speed in-vehicle network. Changing technology and increased complexity requires a testing system very different, and more complex, than those used in IC-only systems.

To get first-hand – or rather, hands-free – experience, we took the opportunity to drive a Lincoln MKZ saloon fitted with autonomous driving technology and a driver monitoring system called Liv developed by Swedish company Veoneer.

To meet the first requirement of ensuring that every driver understands how to use their car’s automated driving system, we had to set up an account with Liv using a mobile phone app. The system then recognised us when we got into the car and prompted us to watch a safety video before allowing us to drive. The system is able to recognise a number of different people and will remember information specific to them and if each one has watched the safety video so they don’t have to view it twice.

Veoneer had swapped the Lincoln’s standard steering wheel for one that lights up in different colours to tell the driver which driving mode it is in: red indicates the driver is in control, amber that control is changing between the driver and the autonomous driving system, and green that the car is in control.
To ensure the driver is constantly monitored, the steering wheel is touch sensitive, so it knows if the driver has taken their hands off the wheel at an unsafe time, and the driver monitoring system it’s linked up to uses camera technology to assess how much attention the driver is paying to the road. It constantly tracks where the driver is looking and will send an alert if they have their eyes off the road for too long.

In my opinion L3 is a done deal already with maybe the odd T to cross. On any legal contract Iam sure they wouldn’t be putting posts like this unless it was pretty much sorted. I believe this in mind will be our 1st confirmation in January.

Hardware vs. software
Consider Seeing Machines. As previously reported, Seeing Machines generates roughly half its DMS business from solutions available in software, the rest via chips.

Seeing Machines tabs Xilinx as its long-time silicon partner for DMS. It also offers OEMs a second option of software-only DMS, creating “an optimization path” for specific chips OEMs prefer.

A good example is Qualcomm, whose Snapdragon automotive platform is making inroads in in-vehicle infotainment and ADAS. With Seeing Machines, Qualcomm is devising “a very optimized software pipeline that makes use of not only the standard Arm cores on that device, but the proprietary Qualcomm accelerators,” Nick DiFore, Seeing Machines’ senior vice president for automotive, told EE Times. Cognizant that DMS isn’t the only application ADAS processors will run, DiFore called optimization “very important.”

DiFore also acknowledged that Seeing Machines’ DMS software runs on Nvidia, Renesas, TI and others “on a wide array of platforms that are popular among OEMs.”

Smart Eye is solidly committed to software only DMS solutions. Smart Eye CEO Martin Krantz said his company made a strategic choice for hardware agnosticism ten years ago. “The market has since proven us right.”

In Europe, however, DMS is a mandate in progress. The DMS assessment by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) will begin in 2024. The organization is currently developing test protocols in collaboration with DMS suppliers. DMS is expected to be incorporated in mass-market vehicles.

The Gamechangers
With hybrid and all-digital clusters, digital ****pits will redefine mobility as a holistic in-vehicle experience. It will give right, distraction free access to information for drivers while passengers will be kept informed, entertained, connected and safe. Digital ****pits will consist of Heads-up Information Displays, significant Rear-Seat Entertainment, the Driver Monitoring Systems to check driver-alertness and other safety-critical features.

Facilitating this will be partnerships between OEMs and Tech giants - for infrastructure, for connected-vehicle tech, to test autonomous parking, for sensing-software installations across product lines. ADAS technologies will also enter the e-****pit space as in-cabin development gathers speed. Increased focus in the connected vehicle segment will be a natural extension of the experimentation.

Autonomous Driving
Automation levels in cars are split into five categories, starting from Level 0, where the driver fully controls the vehicle, to Level 5, where the vehicle is entirely autonomous, and no driver control is needed. Cars at Level 0 are the most common on the roadways now, but forecasts expect change. By 2024, cars with some automation level will represent more than half of all vehicles produced, with Levels 1 through 3 seeing the most significant growth.
