Ford Motor Co. sold more vehicles in the U.S. during the second quarter this year than in 2021, bucking the industry trend.

In the months of April, May and June, Ford sold 483,688 vehicles — helped by a Bronco surge — for a 1.8% overall quarterly sales increase over a year ago.

Other vehicles that contributed included the Mustang Mach-E, Edge, Explorer and Maverick:

Bronco went from 801 to 31,269. Up 3,803.7%
Mach-E went from 6,361 to 10,941. Up 72%
Edge went from 17, 205 to 25,041. Up 45.5%
Explorer went from 52,997 to 60,181. Up 13.6%

Erich Merkle, Ford U.S. sales analyst, told the Free Press that customers placing orders for vehicles has helped with delivery flow. He spotlighted the major contrast between Ford's 1.8% sales growth versus the overall industry's 20.4% sales drop.

Ford crushed Q2 earnings on July 27. The automaker saw earnings skyrocket 423% to 68 cents per share. Revenue leapt 50% to $40.19 billion, both easily beating vies. That jump was driven by "a 35% increase in wholesale shipments together with favorable pricing and vehicle mix.

A driver-facing camera, meanwhile, keeps an eye on the driver’s gaze—even when the driver is wearing sunglasses—and hand position to make sure the individual behind the wheel is ready to take back control of the vehicle if necessary. For what it’s worth, Ford’s marketing manager for Co-Pilot 360, Karen Sullivan, assured members of the media that BlueCruise’s driver-attention data “only stays in the camera,” as opposed to getting sent elsewhere.

Ford plans to continuously improve upon BlueCruise, too, with additional over-the-air updates that ought to add future features such as lane change assist and predictive speed functions, as well as revisions to the system’s maps that will include more BlueCruise-compatible roads. Although users will not be able to use BlueCruise while towing, Ford’s engineering supervisor for Co-Pilot 360, Michael Kane, implied future updates could address this issue.

Ford BlueCruise is sweeping North America with F-150, Mustang Mach-E, and other Ford vehicle customers accumulating 10.6 million miles of hands-free highway driving since the technology launched in July 2021.

Now, Ford Power-Up software updates are bringing BlueCruise to even more customers who bought vehicles before the technology launched. Nearly 15,000 model-year 2021 F-150 and Mustang Mach-E customers already completed the BlueCruise software updates with another 35,000 in process. This adds to customers who bought vehicles with BlueCruise equipped at the factory, totaling about 66,500 customers enjoying hands-free highway driving.

“We are rapidly increasing the number of digital vehicles on the road with new services that create ‘always-on’ customer relationships with great software experiences,” said CEO Jim Farley. “BlueCruise is a great example as customers have driven more than 10 million miles hands-free in just one year since we launched the capability and delivered it with a Ford Power-Up software update.”

The pace of BlueCruise hands-free highway driving is accelerating as customers more than doubled mileage from last month alone – from 4.5 million miles to 10.6 million miles. This is another example of Ford bringing innovations to the masses, not just the few.

Recent BlueCruise data also shows customers are driving hands-free on highways most between Dallas and Houston, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, and Cape Canaveral and Ft. Lauderdale.

“Ford Power-Up technology is the gift that keeps giving. Ford BlueCruise software updates are a powerful example of this. One day you’re driving normally and the next hands-free,” said Farid Abdulhadi, program manager, Ford Power-Up Technology. “Ford is helping lead the mainstream adoption of advanced software update capability, similar to how smartphones changed the world of flip phones.”

BlueCruise uses blue lighting on the digital instrument cluster to indicate when the vehicle is in a hands-free zone. A driver-facing camera in the instrument cluster monitors eye gaze and head position to help ensure the driver’s eyes remain on the road.

Which Electric Truck Has The Better Driver Assist Systems?
It's worth a quick look at both trucks' advanced driver assist systems (ADAS), each of which allow for hands-free driving on highways and interstates. Rivian's setup, Driver+, is the less polished of the two. It currently works in fewer areas (though Rivian is constantly mapping and adding roadways) and often hugs lane lines and gets "bumped" by traffic either driving too close or sneaking in front of the truck. Taller drivers also reported difficulty seeing the Driver+ status icon around the steering wheel rim. Ford's system, dubbed Blue Cruise, is the better of the two. It drives as a human driver would, sends clear signals as to when it's safe to have your hands off the wheel, and lets you know when it needs you to take control with plenty of warning. Neither system is as good as GM's Super Cruise.

As the race toward full-self driving continues, automakers are offering varying levels of autonomous driving to their tech-obsessed customers. General Motors, for example, introduced Super Cruise. It may not be able to fully drive the vehicle, but it's very impressive.

But Ford wasn't going to sit around and let GM get all the glory. Instead, it started developing the similarly-named Blue Cruise, which would allow Mustang Mach-E and F-150 owners to palm off driving responsibilities on certain stretches of American highways - more than 130,000 miles, to be exact.

The technology is becoming increasingly popular amongst Ford owners, with the Blue Oval noting adoption rates have gone through the roof since it was introduced in July last year. In fact, 15,000 owners of 2021 F-150 and Mustang Mach-E E vehicles have received the hands-free driving tech through the company's Power-Up software updates.

In the coming months, that number is only expected to grow. The Dearborn-based company notes that 35,000 additional customers will soon be enjoying this feature. In total, 66,500 Ford drivers are sailing up American highways with the help of BlueCruise.

Wonder if better DMS is on the list?

While Musk did not detail the manufacturing improvements that are in store for the Cybertruck and future models, it's good to hear that Tesla is working on that. He didn't go into details about the future models either.

It's somewhat surprising to hear Elon Musk talk about future products after he said in January that Tesla would not be developing any new products in 2022 and would push the start of production for the Cybertruck—and likely the Semi as well—to 2023. During the Q2 2022 earnings call, Musk said the Cybertruck would enter production in mid-2023 and might actually be Tesla's "best product ever."

When he talks about future products, he obviously means other models than the Cybertruck pickup and Semi Class 8 electric truck, which are yet to be released on the market. There has been plenty of talk about Tesla developing an entry-level model in China that would cost around $25,000, but Musk said in January that the automaker was not working on that car "at the moment" as it had "too much on its plate."

You can’t buy a fully self-driving car today — and may never be able to — but automakers are looking at ways to shift more of the workload from human drivers to machinery. Mercedes-Benz may have taken the biggest step in that direction yet.
As with hands-off systems from GM and Ford, we appreciated the use of driver monitoring. It not only prevents drivers from taking a nap behind the wheel, but also makes it less likely that drivers will inadvertently deactivate Drive Pilot. Some driver-assist systems rely on a driver gripping the steering wheel to check that they are still paying attention, but tugging too hard can be misinterpreted as an attempt to retake manual control.Ok

Drive Pilot is indeed a step above other driver-assist systems. It performs better, with smooth control inputs and responses that are quick but not jarring. Mercedes has also thoroughly developed the whole package, from the sensor suite to governing software that give the system more awareness of the environment a car is traveling through.

Stellantis now encompasses no fewer than fourteen car brands and it has big ambitions to electrify all of them and become a global electric vehicle leader. And things seem to be going to plan since the group just announced an almost 50 percent in the number of battery electric vehicles it sold in the first half of 2022 compared to last year, with 136,000 of them sold.

Among all its brands, the group offers 20 fully-electric vehicles and it plans to increase that number to 28 vehicles in the next two years. Carlos Tavares, the CEO of the Stellantis group said

In North America, for instance, where it sells Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Chrysler, it says it “achieved record profitability” in the past six months, pointing to the strong early uptake for the Wrangler 4xe, which is now said to be the best selling plug-in hybrid in the United States; Jeep plans to add several more PHEVs in the near future so things are looking good.
