Least a connection with Qualcomm

Late last year the Meta team working on silicon for version 2 of the glasses was told the company was going with a Qualcomm custom chip that would power a number of functions, including taking high-quality photos and video, The Information reports.

The Meta CEO was careful not to name the device, although the feature description and launch window make it undoubtedly Project Cambria that’s being discussed here.

“The one you’re talking about, basically social presence, and the ability to now have eye contact in virtual reality, have your face be tracked so that way your avatar is not just like this still thing, but if you smile or if you frown or if you pout—or whatever your expression is—to actually have that, in real time, translated to your avatar… obviously our facial expressions are […] huge; there’s more nonverbal communication when people are with each other than verbal communication,” Zuckerberg said.

Project Cambria is the company’s next high-end standalone VR headset, which is notably kitted with color passthrough sensors which allow it to do augmented reality stuff like playing immersive games and social experiences in the setting of your own living room.

Like Zuckerberg mentioned in the JRE podcast, the headset is also dialing in on social presence thanks to eye and facial tracking, something that will see the high-end device priced at “significantly higher” than $800, putting it more in the realm of enthusiasts and developers.

The company launched its Management Guardian For commercial trucks and buses in 2016. The company claims that the driver monitoring system has since covered more than 1 billion kilometers and detected more than 3.6 million “incidents related to driver fatigue and distraction”.

Seeing Machines claims that their technology is “scientifically proven to reduce the incidence of fatigue by more than 90%.” According to Crunchbase, the company has raised $5.7 million in funding. It has a partnership with chipmaker Qualcomm.

Vehicle safety regulations which will come into force in Europe in 2024 will create an upcoming windfall for a Canberra-based company selling its technology to global car manufacturers.

It's a little-known fact that Canberra-developed safety technology is operating in over 440,000 cars - and rising every day.

Seeing Machines, a public company listed on the London stock exchange which launched in the ACT 16 years ago and still has its headquarters in Canberra, has now reached what chief executive officer Paul McGlone described as an “inflection point” in its corporate growth and income.

With more than 90 per cent of road accidents caused by “human mistakes” according to the European safety authority EuroNCAP, from July 2024 under European General Safety Regulations all new cars sold in Europe will be required to have a camera which “watches” for signs of driver distraction, with an attention warning.

From 2023, vehicles will need to be fitted with direct driver monitoring to stand a chance of achieving a full score in the Occupant Status Monitoring (OSM) category, with the system doling out warnings should a driver’s attention stray too far from the task of driving.

According to the company, the Fisker Ocean ADAS will have multiple sensors, including market-leading cameras, five Fisker Digital Radars, and sophisticated driver monitoring technology. In fact, the electric SUV will include 12 ultrasonic sensors surrounding the vehicle. Additionally, it will have one front view camera and four surround view cameras.
