An automated fatigue monitoring system (also often referred to as an eye tracker, or
camera-based driver monitoring system (DMS)) typically faces the driver and uses eye
closure, head movement, and eye movement to detect fatigue and distraction. This type
of monitoring is sometimes called “direct” DMS (as opposed to “indirect” DMS, which
infers driver fatigue or distraction from, e.g., lane keeping behavior or hands on wheel
detection). Upon real-time detection of fatigue or distraction, an automated fatigue
monitoring system may issue multi-modal alerts to the autonomous specialist,
consisting of, for example, a tone, a vibration under their seat, and a flashing light. It
may also then provide a real-time video feed to remote human raters of fatigue.

11. How many companies are using Bdms & how many vehicles is it in?

In a recent paper Waymo released, the company spills the beans on its methods and strategies for avoiding problems with driver fatigue and inattention. While this information might not be useful for most drivers, hopefully the people testing other systems (including Tesla’s FSD Beta and Autopilot) can get a few good ideas from what they shared.

Waymo says its Fatigue Risk Management (FRM) framework revolves around three things: (1) fatigue prevention; (2) fatigue monitoring; and (3) fatigue mitigation. On a practical level, this involves (1) continued education; (2) awareness and reporting; (3) real-time vigilance assessment; (4) supplemental engagement; and (5) adaptive scheduling. Let’s take a quick look at what each of these things mean.

Real-Time Vigilance Assessment
Waymo uses Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) in much the same way many ADAS systems, but with more monitoring and communication. An automated fatigue monitoring system may provide multi-modal notifications to the autonomous specialist, which might include a tone, a vibration under their seat, and a flashing light. It can also instantly provide remote human judges with a real-time video feed.

The framework we’ve covered above include comprehensive fatigue prevention and monitoring. But, Waymo says they’re not enough on their own. They say active intervention measures should be included in a comprehensive FRM, according to data analysis of over 10 years of on-road operations. Supplemental engagement with the driver also helps keep people alert and awake. This comes in two forms: interactive cognitive tasks (to keep the mind awake) and secondary alerts.

They don’t go into detail on what a cognitive task is, but they go into great detail describing how the tasks are assigned. During monotonous driving tasks, both the driver and an automated computer program can assign these little tasks to keep people awake. One description of the tasks sounds like the driver is given a quiz or asked questions about the weather and road conditions, which they can answer by pressing a button on the steering wheel.

I can’t see it being down here by end Sept after a Qualcomm event, the SEE london event & hopefully news aswell.

Qualcomm should be big, very big. Not only Europe & USA but 1st time today I found them talking up China as being a big market.

Hopefully our own work in Japan & Korea on top of Q in China, which is all on top of the stuff we already have in USA & Europe Iam baffled why more Funds are not piling in yet? I guess profitably and paying dividends is one reason atm for them not to be in.

Iam sure Q will be also working in India with all their connections. Another big market that no one really talks about yet it’s the 4th biggest in the world.

And Qualcomm already work with all of them!

Main competitor closing in – Seeing Machines with three new programs in Q2
In Q2, Seeing Machines was awarded three new programs, similar to three platforms. Of these, two were to new OEMs. The way Seeing Machines communicates its design wins , which is much earlier than Smart Eye does, could play a big role in our perception. Nevertheless, we cannot rule out a technological shift that favors Seeing Machines.

Continued delays for Automotive ramp-up
Automotive revenues did not ramp up the way we had estimated in Q2. Instead, there is a continued delay. We estimate that Q3 and Q4 will have a somewhat softer revenue acceleration, and that the real bump in license revenues will come in 2023.

While a full six OEMs have now entered volume production, we think current revenues almost only comes from BMW. Thus, the company is waiting for much more volumes from the remaining five OEMs.

Looks like it’s coming but just need more patience…

The Chinese market will be a major revenue source for US semiconductor company Qualcomm's automotive business, as China's massive vehicle sector has a faster adoption of autonomous driving technologies than many others, a senior company executive said.

The comment came as Qualcomm sees big opportunities from the fledgling Chinese self-driving industry and the California-based company is stepping up its push to expand business beyond chips for consumer electronics and to continuously grow its automotive business.

Nakul Duggal, senior vice-president and general manager of automotive for Qualcomm Technologies, said in an exclusive online interview with China Daily: "China has a number of globally leading companies that are investing in autonomous driving. Their demand for software, systems, artificial intelligence and other technologies present large opportunities."

What's Next: The company's Automotive Investor Day is set to take place on Sept. 22. Qualcomm CFO Akash Palkhiwala previously told Benzinga the company will further explain at the event why it has an opportunity to "win big in this area."

"We hope to actually share a whole lot more detail about many more customers and partnerships that we are building," Duggal said.

When asked if investors should expect product demonstrations, announcements or new partnerships at the Automotive Investor Day, Qualcomm's Duggal said: "I think they will see a little bit of all of the above."

He noted that Qualcomm doesn't announce specific partnerships until programs are closer to production, but he mentioned Volkswagen AG (Pink: VWAGY), Stellantis N.V. (NYSE: STLA) and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (Pink: BMWYY).

"We really work with every major automaker globally," Duggal said.

EXCLUSIVE: Why Qualcomm's Automotive Business Is Seeing 'Transformation Like Never Before'

What's Driving The Growth? Qualcomm continues to diversify its revenue streams and automotive is a big part of said efforts. The company generated $350 million in automotive revenue last quarter, representing nearly 40% growth year-over-year.

Duggal tells Benzinga that Qualcomm has been consistently focused on building its automotive segment for the last several years, which has helped the company become a leader in telematics and infotainment. Qualcomm is also focused on ramping up assisted and automated driving capabilities, he added.

"So all of those three categories coming together have contributed to the great results that we shared," Duggal said.

Qualcomm noted that it has $19 billion in its automotive design-win pipeline when it reported third-quarter results. The figure is based on continued traction and design-wins across global automakers for its Snapdragon Digital Chassis technology.

Duggal told Benzinga that Qualcomm is working much more closely with automakers than it did in the past.

"We are actually working directly with automakers to help define what their next-generation platforms look like ... and that's where our Snapdragon Digital Chassis comes in," he said.

It is China's first mass-produced model to sport Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride, the chipmaker's platform for autonomous driving functions.

Qiao Xinyu, deputy general manager of Wey, said smart driving will be the decisive factor in the competition in the NEV segment.

In terms of hardware, the model features 31 sensors including two pieces of lidar as well as a 360 TOPS chip.

Seeing Machines

The vast majority of UK investors are unlikely to know about Australia-based minnow Seeing Machines. However, this could be set to change as it rapidly becomes the biggest player in software and systems designed to monitor driver distraction and fatigue and, in doing so, reduce accidents on the road.

Although only currently available on the premium models, this tech is likely to become standard over time in accordance with legislation. Seeing Machines also makes money from having its Guardian tech fitted retrospectively to fleets.

But Seeing’s eye-tracking tech isn’t just limited to cars and trucks. The company also has its fingers in multiple pies including aviation and rail. This could further turbocharge growth in the years ahead.

Jan 4 (Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) on Tuesday said it is working with Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) on custom chips that would control lightweight augmented reality glasses for use by both consumers and businesses for metaverse apps.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano Amon said during a press conference that the two companies will work together to mate the custom chips with the software that developers need to create virtual worlds in which people can work and play.
