Cytiva make all of genedrive’s existing assays. I think an acquisition could also be on the cards by cytiva’s patent company. Who knows... all makes sense if you squint a little :)

NYCT's product needs to be chilled on arrival but can be shipped without chilling. GDRs can be kept at room temperature until used. Also NYCT's mixes need re-hydrating and then dispensing, GDR's are already dispensed. This leads to less error potential and whilst It may not sound like a big deal, that dispensing step takes up a volume and could halve the amount of sample you can add to the test, GDR's is rehydrated in the sample itself. Plus GDR's test is more tolerance of mutations etc.

Hopefully not, the global market for the GDR test is significantly greater than the UK, I think it shows the capacity difference. Our supplier makes most of the raw ingredients that go into the test, Novacyt has to reply on suppliers from elsewhere hence their capacity to supply. I suspect UK and ROW supply for GDR to be announced shortly.

They should have set the following sensitivity and specificity for a more realistic clinical performance

QPCR >=95%, >=98%
IgM IgG Antibody >= 90%, >=95%
Antigen / Affimer etc direct detection >=90%, >=98%

They should also say what the sample type should be for these performance criteria. It’s a poor show in my view.

I’ve heard that too for a while now but I’m not aware of any antibody test and not least for other coronaviruses that have that Level sensitivity, certainly direct detection with antigens will never reach that sensitivity. QPCR can reach that level with appropriate sampling. It seems like these specifications are being set by clinicians and not diagnostics manufacturers in my view.

Because of their previous work with WHO and NHS I suspect GDR have a network of groups that can access samples. It’s interesting to note on the genedrive website they already state that validated sample types include Nasopharyngeal swabs and Oropharyngeal swabs - the word validated has a very specific meaning in diagnostics, it means these sample type have been used and shown to provide the required sensitivity and specificity in normal clinical use. GDR would not use this wording incorrectly so they have already tested the assay with clinical samples.

Hi Marve, yes there are already 30 or more mutations giving rise to geographically distinct strains of the virus. If the mutations occur at certain points they lead to viruses with different protein sequences, this is how they evade the immune system. These changes can also throw off genetic tests as well as antibody tests or antigen tests. Genedrive state their chemistry is less susceptible to these mutations.

MKumar, the GDR test has some benefits and advantages over NCYTs. Biggest in my mind is tolerance to mutations, not discussed yet but if covid-19 becomes like the cold virus (another coronavirus) then these will mutate and could throw some tests off. Also GDR have a POC platform.

They both utilise different parts of the cytiva business, lyophilisation in the case of gdr and lateral flow for AVCT. Cytiva will benefit with both. I do think they represent different use cases. GDR fits the high volume testing and POC.

It’s an unknown if AVCT can match qPCR sensitivity at this point, exciting times in this race have the best test! My money is literally all on GDR!
