Here it is John, just in case you missed it, because threads seem to be only 5 long these days:
In March 2022, Jokkmokk Iron received a processing concession for Kallak Norra and has the ambition to open a sustainable mine that in the long run will contribute about 500 jobs to the region, all as part of the ongoing green revolution in northern Sweden. A key issue for all green players in the north who invest heavily is the transport possibilities, which in themselves are decisive for the success of the investment which is now being followed by the whole world.
Transporting heavy goods on the railway networks requires upgrading and investments, and Jokkmokk Iron earlier in the spring demanded information about the all-important Inlandsbanan. Happily, for the past month the company has had a continuous and constructive dialogue with Inlandsbanan's CEO Otto Nilsson, and the actors have now unanimously chosen to go ahead with a project based on upgrading the Arvidsjaur-Gällivare section to a standard that meets the needs of business for rail transport .This solution would also open up the possibility of reaching a northern connection to the Malmbanan in Gällivare and for a possible southern connection to the Stambanan via Arvidsjaur-Jörn and the ports of Luleå, Piteå and Skellefteå. This would benefit many companies that need transport solutions in the region.
"We are serious about the green transition and mainly see trains as the main transport option and not trucks on the road. It is the most sustainable alternative and an expansion of the railway network is generally critical to achieve in order to achieve the Norrland green revolution. I am happy that we can now move forward with this project together with Inlandsbanan and other stakeholders in the region. After our earlier demand for information about the Inlandsbanan, it is gratifying that things are now moving and that so many people have shown interest in the issue," says Ulla Sandborgh, CEO of Jokkmokk Iron.
An upgrade of the Inlandsbanan would create a long-awaited redundancy in the railway network, a network which is currently strained and fragile for both freight transport and national security. The outside world is changing rapidly and suddenly industry and total defense have completely new conditions and other needs. A modern and upgraded Inlandsbana could therefore strengthen and serve far more municipalities and regions than those that currently have a direct interest in the line.
"In order to meet the green industrial boom in northern Sweden, an upgraded and modern Inlandsbana is needed, I think everyone is aware of that. Concrete measures and constructive proposals are now required for us to move forward, and it is positive that private actors such as Jokkmokk Iron see the value of the track and contribute with proactive solutions. Equipping the Inlandsbanan is in itself no difficulty, but it requires funding, which has not been available so far," says Otto Nils
