.......Ceres leaves the manufacturing to its partners — principally Bosch, the German giant that is its largest shareholder. The pair announced plans for a new plant in China earlier this year. Phil Caldwell, chief executive, compared Ceres to Arm, the British designer of microchips that helped revolutionise mobile phones by licensing its work to others. “At Ceres we create lots of high value, science innovation, and then we partner with people like Bosch who can do the mass manufacture,” he said. Caldwell is in no doubt vast factories will be needed to churn out its designs. “Very large companies are now putting in hundreds of millions into scaling these technologies, because they’re essential to hit net zero,” he said.

Rolls-Royce is eyeing a new business making its own electrolysers so that it can “build a complete supply chain”, according to Fuerderer. And last week, BP took a 40 per cent stake in a $30 billion project in western Australia that could help vastly expand its output of hydrogen......

Why bidders may knock at Whitbread’s door

....there is enough to convince potential bidders to take a tilt at Whitbread, even putting aside an undemanding price tag. Owning roughly 56 per cent of its estate gives the group a property portfolio valued at £3.4 billion at the start of March. A sale-and-leaseback of just a slice of those hotels and land could be one way to unlock value for a potential bidder. There is also the temptation to lever up to boost returns, which could get private equity fingers twitching. In March the group had £141 million in net cash on the balance sheet, .............Premier Inn has ten times the hotels it entered the pandemic with in Germany and the financial clout to expand further.

Likely upgrades by analysts to earnings forecasts this year make the shares look even cheaper. Shore Capital has mooted an increase in pre-tax profit this year by a punchy £50 million to £60 million .....
