If the buybacks from here are really going to influence the SP (I see the theory, but would like to see the positive impact) then it would be better for us as SH's if the update in two weeks is neutral to positive without being explosive. What I mean is that to buy back the remain shares for cancellation would be cheaper if the SP doesn't rocket. For that reason, it might be better if we see the continued buybacks (and cancellation of those shares bought back) before getting news of whatever deal AB is looking at for ENQ. Just thinking aloud, but the tighter the liquidity at the time of news of a M&A deal, the better.
Probably best not to get too excited. HBR's deal was greated with a great deal of excitement, a good SP rise, broker upgrades and now the SP is back beelow 280. This is all following a buyback programme of their own and regular communication with the market suggesting operations are going just fine and there has been no impediment to the deal with Wintersall being completed and even positive views that it'll complete as planned and on time.
Remember, as the share buyback was announced, there was excitement on this board that it would lead to increases in the SP (despite that not happening with HBR). The discussion this board relating to the SP has largely been wrong to date. The trend is your friend so, I'd just sound a note of caution as to whether the SP will rise as the buybacks continue and the shares are cancelled. To put the buybacks into perspective it makes sense to look at the issued and to be issued shares = 1 trillion 8 hundred and ninety one billion shares give or take. What is the outstanding figure to be bought and cancelled? I can't be bothered to look as I'm sure it's insignificant compared to the total number of shares. Another 25 million shares to be cancelled, represents 1.32% of the shares in issue. Just thinking aloud.
