We are delighted to have marked the start of National Apprenticeship Week today by sponsoring a Maritime UK roundtable at our head office in London.

The roundtable brought together apprentices from across the sector to share their experiences and included a session with employers, who shared best practice and identified areas for collaboration.

We were especially glad to have welcomed two of our apprentices to take part in the discussion – Ben from Appledore and Victoria from Belfast. Both are apprentice welders and joined Harland & Wolff in September 2023.

⚓ Today we are kicking off National Apprenticeship Week with a roundtable discussion in partnership with Harland & Wolff.

Discussions centered around collaboration to maximise the value of apprenticeships across the sector, and identify relevant ‘asks’ of government to make apprenticeships work as well as possible for maritime businesses.

During the event, apprentices were given the opportunity to share their stories and experiences, helping to shine a spotlight on their individual traineeships within the sector.

We are grateful for everyone that participated and made the event such an enriching and valuable experience.

It's National Apprenticeship Week! This is an opportunity for businesses and the skills sector to celebrate the achievements of apprentices around the country and the positive impact they make to communities, businesses, and the wider economy.

Harland & Wolff’s apprenticeship programme was first launched in 2021 and is designed to equip young people leaving school and college with the skills required to forge a rewarding and long-term career in shipbuilding and marine fabrication. Over 150 apprentices have so far taken part in the scheme, with 2024 set to boost those numbers significantly.

Apprenticeship opportunities are available at each of Harland & Wolff’s four manufacturing sites; and in three skill areas – trades, business support and technical. The variety of opportunities on offer aim to provide apprentices with a wide range of transferable skills to navigate the ever-changing maritime industry.

Those joining the scheme could have the opportunity to work on the next generation of Fleet Solid Support ships the company is helping build through to working on green sources of energy such as offshore wind turbine foundations. All with support of skilled tradespeople committed to share their knowledge and skills to future generations of maritime professionals.

Ref my 12.14 post I have just noticed an errant not crept in the sentence should read 'As you say there is no need for external advice if you are going to say no.'

Si_Derman ref 11.09 post I am not sure who is Shirley. You are quite right I omitted two very important words I should have said a decision in principle. It would seem that there is more than one route to funding IM so they want to get external advice. As you say there is no need for external advice if you are not going to say no. This is the point I am trying not very successfully to get across to Consuela.

Consuela ref 10.12 post You clearly do not know what you are talkng about. For the issue to even reach the Minister's desk to ask for authorisation to spend £150k for a consultant to advise on options for a public finance intervention in all probability a decision to fund would have been needed. Whether that decision to fund was made at ministerial or official level I am ot certain but you would not be asking for Ministerial approval for a consultancy spend for something like this unless you were going make the intervention.

On your second point why would public backing need to be sought for the spending on a consultancy spend? This is normal government business.

Xenor ref 07.52 post having reread the 29 December 2023 RNS I would expect a decision mid month at the earliest. The area of delay in my view islikely to be the independent third party who will be making the recommendaton as to what the premium above SONIA will be. They were not due to start that work until last month. While some work can be done without this the final documentation cannot be done until the premium above SONIA has been agreed.

Consuela ref 16.45 post you clearly misread the entry it says 'Islandmagee Gas Storage Facility approve £150k consultancy expenditure to look at options for public finance interventions.' It refers to public finance interventions not a public consultations. The reference to consultancy exercise in the context of the entry means external management consultants. So the Department of Economy are clearly trying to decide on intervening with the use of public finance. There is no other interpretation that makes sense. If you are right what is the consultation on?

Bubble2021 ref 16.15 post Yes unless they successfully petition the Supreme Court for leave to appeal. That has a low success rate of less than 10%.

Xenor ref 15.25 post On the original JR you are wrong as it was a High Court decision it is only persuasive. A decision from the Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland will be binding on all the courts in Northern Ireland and persuasive in England Wales and Scotland.

Xenor ref 14.05 post You need to remember that any decision will not only impact this case but will be binding in every other case going forward where the same or similar point is made. Therefore, the judges will be careful to make sure they get it right. Also you have to remeber that the JR was heard by a single judge the appeal will be heard by a panel of 3 or 5 judges and the majoity would need to agree. I therefore am going to keep with my prediction of Q2.

Consuela ref 11.52 post that is your opinion. However that does not make it accurate. The fact that the marine license is still valid means that there is a possibility that even if HARL does not ultimately build the caverns they will be built by somebody. The fact that officials in the Department of Economy are looking at funding IM supports the view that the caverns will be built. I note what you have said previously about other steps that need to be taken. That said I donot see any of them being insurmountable.

LSE03 ref 11.05 On checking vesselfinder Maersk Cutter is shown as restricted under navigation status and SeaRose is shon as underway. However both are shown as going at the same speed.

Just seen the attached article from UK Defence Journal https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/fresh-delays-hit-scottish-ferries/ . If you scroll down to about halfway there is a discussion on possible future defence work. It is clear that Ferguson and HARL will be competing for the same subcontract work. It is not clear how much sub cintract work has been won by either company to date.

I was wondering instead of buying a ferry why does HARL not in the medium term build its own ferries. I wold have thought it would be cheaper.
