in a quantum universe, all things are possible, so i suppose it is possible
that amit has managed to sell some highly valuable intellectual property
owned by CTAG for more than a quarter of a billion dollars. (just as it is
possible that my cat might spontaneously mutate into a unicorn or a
fire-breathing dragon.) live long enough and anything can happen, eh!
but while CTAG shareholders wait for that huge payout, pis of a mildly
cautious disposition could while away some of the time revising some
of the tricks and traps which unscrupulous folk have occasionally used to
prey on the unwary. one of the traps with a very long history indeed was
called the ‘spanish prisoner’ letter, although more modern variants of this
have other names, such as ‘advance fee fraud’. the basis mechanism is to
tell someone that there is a huge sum of money overseas just waiting to be
claimed by some lucky person … although in order to get access to that
fund the lucky punter may have to pay just a small release fee, insurance
document, ‘sweetener’ to a government official, banking fee, currency
exchange costs, etc. … but in the long run, the huge sum never turns up,
and those advance fees are never seen again. obviously, very few people
actually fall for that kind of play! - but it doesn’t cost much money to run,
so even if only 5 or 6 people out of a 100 fall for it, can still be v profitable
for the scheme originator. (…and the people who do respond initially are
in a sense self-selecting as particularly good targets...) but obviously, fine
upstanding, ethical & reliable company CEOs would never do such a thing.
all just food for thought to while away a few spare moments, as CTAG
pis wait for their share of those 275,000,000 beans to land in their pockets.
