EE, along with all their rivals, has been offering IoT services for about 10 years. While individual company figures are not publicly disclosed, the total number of IoT connections in the UK is estimated to be around 40 to 50 million. Sooo, IoT technology isn’t really “next generation”—it has been around for a long time and continues to evolve, with IoT equipment typically housed in dedicated data centres.
It’s a highly competitive space, especially among telecom providers, cloud companies, and specialist IoT platform vendors, so it will be challenging for satellite players to make a significant impact.
On the bright side, although Starlink’s IoT service is unlikely to disrupt BT as you might hope having sold your shares, Vodafone already has IoT widely deployed across Europe, with dedicated data centres in the UK, Germany, Ireland, and Spain — so, Starlink isn’t likely to threaten their position either!
