RE: VM / O2 & starlink30 Oct 2025 20:31
In the USA, Starlink’s Direct to Cell service is focused on texting and limited data in remote or uncovered areas.
In New Zealand, the service currently supports basic messaging and satellite-connected phones, with voice and data capabilities to follow.
In Australia, the rollout remains limited — restricted to certain devices and plans, requiring clear-sky outdoor use, and still in its early stages. A full national rollout (including voice and data) has not yet been indicated publicly.
In Japan, there is an active Direct to Cell offering, but it’s still at an early stage and likely limited in device support and service breadth.
Overall, this remains a very immature service, aimed mainly at remote areas with no viable terrestrial alternatives beyond other satellite providers. In Australia and Canada, it could prove quite successful, given their vast, sparsely populated regions where mobile and fixed networks are often impractical. New Zealand and the USA are less clear-cut cases.
In the UK, however, it’s all a bit of a non-event — population density here is more than 50 times that of Canada or Australia, so there simply aren’t many truly remote areas to serve. It’s the kind of thing BT could easily join in with when (and if) it suits them.
In the meantime, BT will push ahead with their FTTP rollout, and we will see the 20 million premises passed milestone announced in the next couple of weeks.
