es, of course you don’t get the dividend — that’s what ex-dividend means. BUT in theory, the share price falls by roughly that amount on the day, which offsets the dividend. In reality, anything can happen — and BT being the weird share it is, the price often falls by more than the dividend. So if someone sells the day before ex-dividend and buys back on the day, they might well end up better off than someone who simply hangs on.
All of this is undermined by trading charges… and if you’re like me, you’re probably too lazy anyway to bother with all that hassle for a few pennies one way or another.
