I think we all go through that stage at 50 thinking will we have sufficent to take us through retirement.
What a waste of time, probably hyped up by the insurance industry.Unless your only facing riots living on a state pensions things will be fine.
A lot of people have the perception their life style will remain the same,it wont.In hard stats men live to around 81yrs so really your only catering for 20yrs which believe me will fly by and if the worse happens and your looking at care costs then surely there must be some insurance package to eliminate that risk.
Long term investing i would say the only sector which HAS to survive in some form is finance.Take oil for instance, sure i feel oil will hit $80 a barrel but to think things will be the same in 10yrs time.Just a break through in battery technology and the whole energy market will change overnight.
With most things the golden rule is never spend more than you are prepared to lose-don't borrow.
Investment opportunities come along in all shapes and sizes.Had the solar panels installed in 2011,break even this year with 40k of income left on the roof.
PS.For the record mum is 91yrs old and lives quite comfortably on state pension,i just provide the red wine!
