If any of us presented this report in bullet point form we'd be accused of mad ramping. Good to see a positive argument and good to see that they recognise sensors as the big near term opportunity.

Hat tip to Kooba on Sony but personally i don't think this goes anywhere unless they are working directly with Sony. Think Edison are incorrect to argue that the Asian customer has the new generation of dot, half year says novel material not next gen, could be the cadmium free in ink jet form who knows.

Likewise display, it's just waffle.

Imo Stm is the only investing argument and because we'll never know the detail it's pretty much impossible to assess where things are. If you look at the HortiQD PhD research question as things stood on the SWIR sensor at 12 April Steckel and Reiss were looking at what interactions 3 distinct lead free QDs on the same array might have on the image sensor and creating a library of results from that. By June the Grenoble academics published HortiQDs first paper which had settled on one QD for SWIR imaging and telecom. Same current month and UKRI quotes a Nano employee stating they had begun with 3 candidates for a lead free QD and ended with one that sounds very similar to the HortiQd QD.

What's going on? Is it exactly the same QD and HortiQD/St & Nano are sharing data, who knows. The next gen JDA with Stm started the same month as HortiQD so probably it's the same dot but i doubt Nano is free to flog it to other customers.

That's the whiny stuff out of the way. A Lead free dot keeps the EU happy. It has academic validation and a company to make it. As the reports suggests Steckels new chip will get itself into mobile phones and yes, i'd be happy with a share price of 152p

PhD announced a while before the research paper was published. My speculation is Nano is the lead free QD manufacturer and supplier for St/hortiQD but guess we have to see if ongoing work with st is mentioned in any August trading update.

The Jan 2024 RNS JDA with STM has ' second generation sensing material to be developed by Nanoco'

It also quotes BT '...ST's commitment to developing a second generation material, emphasises Nanoco's ability to be a robust partner in complex electronics supply chains.'

Curious why a bunch of academics at Grenoble have coincidentally completed a very similar project for HortiQD and at roughly the same time that Nano finished theirs.

The more time i spend looking at ST the more i am convinced that semi-con companies will all have their own in-house QD labs in the future. If the next gen materials being supplied to St are exclusive to ST only then Nano is close to being bought. All imo of course and i know nothing.

He did answer a question i had though - evaluation of the swir QD sensor is through him. Give him a good consumer use case and he will work with you and give you an evaluation kit and he was offering that on the call. This was 2023. And he was talking availability 2 - 5 years as companies begin to see the benefits of swir and work out how they can use it. Chip itself was designed with mobile phones in mind. My best guess is Nano's guidance on scale up for industrial production 2026/2027 is swir sensor related.

Like everyone else i'd love to know what's going on. Whether evaluation kts for the proposed 2021 SWIR thing actually got sent out in 2022. Whether findings from evaluation led to STM asking NANO to tweak and create their next gen of materials. Whether this next gen is exclusive to STM, whether they are explicitly for the SWIR and loads of other stuff too. But i am reduced to waiting for STM announcements cos no one seems to be selling much if any of the 1st gen dots, not Nano or Nanosys/SHoei.

Because they have 6 tab web page for the product that doens't mention QD once, you are deluding yourself if you think this is absent because of any need for secrecy, and you mislead other by suggesting it uses nanoco materials.

There are no QD in this.

Hopefully, STM will announce a prototype for evaluation in 2024, an announcement next week would also be good.

When they eventually list it on their site it will mention QD.

Think all we can do is watch for STM announcements at events. Next one is Sensor Converge 24-26 June.

Not : Secrecy > Evaluation > Production.

On the subject of the Global Shutter SWIR discussed in 2021, the idea was evaluation kits 2022 production in coming years, is there an outside chance that Nano's 1st commercial order was for this, can't imagine they be making more than shed loads of the things in a first production run anyway.

Troublesome - would be interesting to read the case study on Nanoco/ Wah Hong and maybe why nothing seemed to come of it - though i see see nano claimed first commercial orders then too but i'm not spending 4k to download it!

Imo they need a tie up with an oem to get back into the display market and then they would have to burn a bit of cash employing a couple of sales/science communicator types at events like the one Kooba linked to. Most of the oems producing qd display tv also make mobile phones and the relationships they have here will probably carry over into that too.

Watched the first 12 minutes Kooba, If Dr Pickett can do anything with blue pixels maybe we can get back into display. Seriously though it looks very competitive and an area where a dots only approach is probably not enough.

Good wrap up of current state of play of QD in display from 7 May 2024. Shoei c an produce QD on an industrial scale, lots on the history of commercialisation of Qd in display, QD Vision, Nanosys, Samsung. Not one mention of Nano contributing anything. QDEl seen as good alternative to the currently too expensive MicroLED

Towards the end of the article, a depressing omission:

I am sure you are right. The Sharp QDEL piece was Jan 2024. Remaining staff from Nanosys who moved into Shoei still bullish in Oct 2023 and still boasting of themselves as world leaders.
