RE: Another short by the Motley Fool5 Sep 2019 18:48
@ Qwerty - I trade BP as well as UKOG, although with a very different strategy and it may not work for me for much longer, looking at the spread over the last 12 months and where we might be over the next 24.
Just mentioning for the same reasons I've spoken about trading UKOG; So others can be aware of the potential (DYOR).
I went in for the same as you when the share was £3.50 in 2016 (could have taken it closer to £3.00 but was already invested and had no spare cash until I could get my next ISA allowance in April 2016).
I went in purely for the near 6% annual dividend, intending to keep re-investing all of those for a few years and grow my overall holding.
However.., around xmas that year the share had risen to £5.20.
With no experience or skill I moved on a hunch the SP would fall as we moved towards a warmer Spring and sold all my shares for £5.20.
Didn't get my dividend that quarter obviously but I re-invested that money when the price fell to £4.40 in April (I may have missed that dividend as well, can't remember now).
I'd made 18% and it would allow me three years of dividends to be able to buy back in, so it was worth a go.
Obviously it worked for me, but that was the first time I traded and I have been very lucky with some of these, BP I don't trade as much but have been quite lucky because I have a larger holding so I see bigger profits trading that particular share.
Being shut out for three years was worth the risk, and there were always other places I could invest it if I was.
The next two years year I did the same thing (again over xmas), selling and buying back a few weeks later.
This time I got back in in time for the dividend as well.
I did consider doing similar earlier in the Winter build up, but the October crash caught me out last year and I got scared of trading anything until March this year (except my one xmas BP trade again, but I was scared I might get blocked out again).
Trading is much more risky than how you and I looked this share initially.
Could be worth considering two complimentary strategies though.
I've doubled my holding (started out with same as you) in just three years, including dividends.
Just making folks aware.
No personal agenda.
