"Council tax £2,400, Water £900, Electricity and gas £3,000, home furnishings £3,000, travel/transport/car/depreciation of car/car insurance £4,000, mortgage £9,000, leisure £2,000, dining out/special occasions £1,200, toiletries £400, gardening tools and plants £500, sundries £1,000.
Total annual living costs = £27,400."

With a bit of careful planning, and shopping around, it's a fair bet that someone could cut that £27k total by -50%.
