PCR required for all UK arrivals from Tuesday, after vote in the commons Monday and agreement from the other home nations who didn't want to get rid of travel PCR in the first place.

Obviously good news for us business wise but the government needs to crack down on the cowboys and ensure that the service is delivered at a fair price to consumers. It also needs to pick a course and stick to it in the medium term at least.

More likely snidey pre travel testing. There are very few known diseases that would trigger a positive result after only around 10hrs of initial exposure even on PCR. They'll have got dodgy fit to fly tests.

2 flights likely on 777s or equivalent = a positivity rate of around 9%. That really shouldn't be happening and the test providers should be investigated. Setting aside whether it's omicron or not.

Sp28, b.1.1.529 hasn't been designated as variant yet. Unil it has the company is unlikely to say anything.

Little is known about it except it has a worrying number of mutations some of which are associated with increased transmission and vaccine escape. While preliminary data suggests it's displacing delta in SA, that's exactly what it is, preliminary data.

@drb83, you'd have to assume so as it hasn't been designated yet and I doubt even NCYT could work that quickly to guarantee detection. RNS later next week imo.

@kaeren the airlines only this week we're badgering the government yet again to remove all testing requirements for travellers with the wildly incorrect claim that the UK has some of the most onerous restrictions not only in Europe but the world. It is insane that the government, airlines and public expect to be indulging in leisure travel mid pandemic without any precautions in place. Besides, the overriding reason for people not travelling was the stop start nature of the traffic lights system we employed. Market forces would have dealt with PCR pricing and at least provided some form of surveillance. I suspect we're singing from the same sheet on this matter.

We don't even know whether current LFTs will detect this level of protein spike mutation. Multiple gene PCR should, perhaps that's why genesig has miraculously found itself accredited.

If it has the transmission advantage implied in this tweet then there's little doubt it will have already washed up on other shores. At least this time we might invest in a little prophylactic surveillance. We should be insisting on PCR for all SA arrivals with sequencing on all viable positives, not recommending it.
