RE: Debate about renewables14 Oct 2024 14:07
Hi Fuddstone
Yes in my original post I was talking about energy not just electricity (electricity just being one source of energy). I researched this in some depth on Friday and I think my numbers are reasonably accurate although the research is tricky to unravel to be fair.
I came up with
total energy consumption of uk is 1700 twh made up from different original sources of
725 twh of Gas
580 twh of Oil
132 twh of Nuclear
148 twh of Bio (primarily from wood products and waste)
82 twh Wind
15 twh Solar
Plus a few other bits and bobs.
With regard to solar. Shotwick one of our biggest solar farms is 250 acres and generates 72,000 mwh of energy which is 0.072 twh. We would need 23,600 Shotwicks to generate our total energy needs of 1700 twh which would cover 6 million acres or 9,200 square miles (call it 10,000).
200,000 wind turbines or 10,000 square miles of solar farms are the 2 extremes of each source but of course it will be a combination of the 2 and maybe some nuclear. But this just illustrates the scale of the problem if we want to move away from fossil fuels and into renewables.
