RE: Does somebody know something I do not?2 Nov 2023 16:25
Last night there was a local council meeting which lasted for over two hours with a lot of boring local stuff to sit through. Which I did, so you might not have to. :) Part of it was to discuss education, employment and apprenticeships in the local area. To that end they had a few local business bods there including Tom Hart, Appledore General Manager and Tony Cole, Training Manager. Obviously there was a lot of talk about the structure of their own apprenticeship scheme and how it's buidling year on year. The current employee numbers stand at around 185 from only 40 a short time ago. They also restated the sort of increase they are looking at to get to their target numbers over the next year or so. Looking to be passed the 200 mark by Jan/Feb next year and need to be 300 strong by March 2025 when the FSS kicks in.
As part of their response to councillors questions about the availabilty of work for the yard Tom said, " right now we are busy, have been pretty busy all year. Infact have been "maxed out" with the people they have." They have a "healthy pipeline" of work. They also mentioned that they had just signed a contract this week for a new fabrication project. No numbers or details were given so it may not be something that is worthy of an RNS. We shall see, I guess. When asked if they had enough space at the yard the reply was, "oh yeah" . Visitors are surprised at just how big the yard is and what it can do. Mentioned minister visit earlier in the day. No names given.
There was talk of how raw material (steal) deliveries are restricted to the back of flat beds due to tidal issues making deliveries by water not viable unlike other bigger yards in deeper water. Which has the knock-on factor in "how" they actually build ships. Same with delivery of finished fabricated structures. Unless it floats. :) Mentioned the use of localised supply chains as being part of contracts.
Wish I had time to timestamp the best bits but it may be beneficial to use the fastforward function until you see anyone on the right talking. Tom starts at 24 mins in and Tony does a bit of a pitch with a video/slideshow. Difficult to see but I think it was the one from Petroc we saw them post a pic of some time ago. Their initial bit ends at the 1 hour mark. Chris Fuller, yellow tie, Economic Development Manger for Torridge gives brief mentions later regarding clean propulsion, energy cables, green hydrogen, floating wind... but not in any detail.
Worth a listen, I think as you may pick up on things that this breif description has missed.
Good questions from the councillor around the 45:30 mark that instigates most of the info posted above. :)
And I like what Tom says about the yard and the workers at 49:00 as part of the response.
