There is a problem here that even in a blinded trial, it may be obvious that half the people are improving, half not. In the COPD trial this is perhaps why they have published some (still blinded) data. See Pages 12-13 in this presentation :

So they may publish something similar for this trial, possibly quite soon.

I agree, it's hardly surprising that RG has done some derisking of such a large position prior to the trial results. Hugely promising as it is, nothing is certain in this game. And by now there are other shares at knock-down prices which he'll have his eye on.

I doubt if he'll reduce to zero, but that's purely my guess.

I think it's about statistics rather than ethics. Suppose a drug works well for 20% of patients. With a very small group it might just so happen that none of them improve. So now you'd give up on a drug which might have benefited millions.

Or if you do it in 'stages', unblinding one before starting the next, that might risk some sort of placebo effect (positive or negative!).

On the ethics side, trials do normally start with a small number being dosed to check for major safety problems, but of course SNG001 has already been through that.

(I'm Sci/tech but not bio, so this is just my amateur understanding. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can comment.)

Getting back to SNG, of course the historical connection means AZ might be an obvious partner. But as someone on ad-vfn pointed out, it could also be Merck, who already deal with interferon-beta.

Best if it's whoever can get it produced fastest (for us and, more importantly, for the patients).

Hi closetrader, the absence of the word "Synairgen" in that NHS article, and the lack of an RNS, may help answer your question.

As far as I can see, this is just what it says, renewal of a long-standing research collaboration between Soton Uni & AZ. It doesn't directly involve SNG.

It's not clear that Synairgen as such is involved in this new initiative (other than by association). Otherwise it would surely have been RNS'd.

I think that will be the injected interferon-beta, i.e. not our inhaled version.
