When I began covering driver monitoring systems #DMS almost a decade ago, it was from a profound belief that privately-owned passenger vehicles would not drive themselves anytime soon and understanding and mitigating human limitations around #distraction #drowsiness and impaired driving was the best way to make human drivers safer.

I never saw the coming together of human perception and robotics, but fast-forward to #CES2026 and that is precisely where developments point. The CES keynotes were stacked full of fun robot demos, but enabling machines to see and understand the humans around them is the glaring omission from the discussion.

CES shows the tidal wave of money now pouring into robotics is immense and covers #AI giants like NVIDIA and Qualcomm, as well as more obvious names like Tesla and Amazon.

Software-defined architectures make cars smarter and one description could be a “robot on wheels.” Human perception enables cars to understand the driver and occupants. It is not a great leap to extend perception to robots understanding people.

No idea what will happen in 2026 but the DMS and robotics landscapes will change a lot before we come together again in Vegas for CES2027. Exciting times indeed.

We’ve had an amazing time at #CES2026 in Las Vegas! It was exciting to meet with so many providers of anti-drunk driving and anti-impairment #technology. They are already working with the auto industry to comply with anti-impairment standards going into place in Europe in 2026. And they are excited about what’s possible here in the US and we are too!!

Thanks to Gene Boehm of AAA and Lorraine Martin of the National Safety Council for joining us for a whirlwind two days full of meetings, demos and discussions. We were so excited to spend time with CorrActions, Magna International, Seeing Machines, Mitsubishi Electric, Hyundai MOBIS, Valeo, Smart Eye and Trinimix.com - these companies are doing phenomenal work to detect impairment due to substances, drowsiness and distraction. And congrats to our partners Smart Eye for winning a CES Innovation Award!

I don’t remember Smart Eye getting a $14 mill lump sum when they lost BMW. We even know that you win some & you lose some but at least we got paid when we lost so that’s good business.

We still have a Waymo extension announcement & Mitsubishi trials that will convert to future contracts so all positive.

Been a busy December and what a way to finish the year.

Last week we completed the installation of 18 x Gen 3.1 driver safety systems in Newman for Cummins Inc. supporting safer fleet operations for their team.

Big emphasis on fatigue and distraction technology education, quality installs , and keeping vehicles moving with minimal downtime. Squeezed in a pit stop at Auski Roadhouse on the way back to Hedland to make sure the final two devices were online and ready to go.

Proud of the Gurukarri and Mulga team for pushing through tight schedules and Pilbara heat to get it done before the Christmas shutdown.
