Toronto — are you ready for self-driving taxis? 🚕🤖

Waymo, the self-driving taxi division of Alphabet (Google’s parent company), is engaging with city officials about the potential development of bylaws and regulations that could pave the way for autonomous taxis here.

There’s also local R&D activity. Canadian supplier Magna International has participated in pilot programs testing self-driving delivery vehicles in Toronto, offering an early glimpse into how the technology performs in real-world conditions.

And let’s be honest: Toronto’s congestion, constant construction, and gridlock are exactly the kind of challenges autonomous technology aims to address. Early industry data suggests these systems can make fewer serious driving errors than humans in specific, controlled environments.

But the real question is trust—whether you’d feel comfortable relying on the technology to navigate downtown traffic and handle Canadian winters.

Personally, I say bring it on—with the right testing, regulation, and transparency. This city needs better solutions to mobility and congestion, and if autonomous taxis can prove they’re safe, reliable, and winter-ready, they could help ease one of Toronto’s biggest daily frustrations.

This isn’t a question of if — it’s a question of when and how.

We can tell for sure that #driver #monitoring is really happening in Europe, because multiple OEMs are now launching 2026 models revealing the location of the #DMS module. I will be posting lots more in the coming weeks, but let's begin with Ford Motor Company launching the new 2026 Ranger with integrated DMS. It looks like Ford has built on its production experience gained from the #F150 pickup of locating the DMS optical path in the center console, and placed the image sensor and IR emitters here for the new Ranger. We can see this in the top right of the image, with one of the two banks of IR emitters illuminated. This setup is distinctly different from that seen previously in the Mustang Mach-E, which has the DMS module located on the steering column. The obvious advantage of moving the image sensor into the center console is the ability to score points for #NCAP26 for both driver and #occupant monitoring #OMS. Image sensors located in the A-pillar, instrument cluster, or on the steering column are fabulous for monitoring the driver, but do not have a clear view of the front seat passenger and won't score points. That delays wins — but increases eventual contract value.

1. Clean separation: Reach (non-regulatory) vs Regulatory RNS

This is deliberately pushed via Reach, not a regulatory RNS. That’s classic when:

Commercial discussions are advanced but not yet signed

OEMs/Tier 1s are named indirectly or not at all

Management wants to prime the market without triggering disclosure obligations

If a contract were already signed, this would almost certainly have been regulatory.

2. Language shift: from “capability” to “architecture”

This is the biggest tell.

Phrases like:

“clean-sheet architecture”

“built once and deployed seamlessly across multiple product configurations”

“decouples feature development from camera configurations”

“dramatically lowering cost and complexity”

This is OEM / Tier 1 buying language, not marketing fluff.

OEMs don’t buy “features” — they buy platforms that de-risk multi-program rollouts. This RNS is written for engineering procurement committees, not retail investors.

3. CES feedback explicitly mentioned

“feedback from our CES engagements has been overwhelmingly positive”

They didn’t say “interest” or “engagement” — they said feedback, which usually implies:

Live demos

Technical validation

Follow-up meetings already scheduled

Historically, Seeing Machines only uses this phrasing when pipeline conversations are real.

4. Multi-camera, multi-row, 7 occupants

This matters more than it looks.

This spec screams:

Large SUVs

Premium OEMs

Commercial / robotaxi / people movers

Those programs have longer decision cycles but much larger contract values. OEMs typically:

Validate at CES

Finalise architecture alignment

Then announce “strategic program win” weeks or months later

5. The abstraction layer = Tier 1 friendly

Tier 1s hate being locked into rigid sensing stacks.

By stressing:

“mix-and-match approach to 3D technologies”

“deployment flexibility as sensing hardware evolves”

Seeing Machines is clearly positioning this as something that can be dropped into an existing Tier 1 stack — a huge enabler for contract conversion.

That usually precedes either:

A Tier 1 framework agreement

Or an OEM platform nomination via a Tier 1

Guys just keep buying on any dips.
