Yes Dan, you can buy shares below the mid-price and sell above the mid-price. It's not unusual at all. Often happens when a share's spread is wide. Such as bid 40, ask 45, you will likely to buy it at under 43. That will be recorded as a sell on the trade report. Vice versa, you probably can sell it at over 43 and that will be recorded as a buy!!
Example for VOD: bid 122.10, ask 122.3, so mid-price would be 112.2. You probably can buy it @122.19 or less and that would recorded as a sell. You can possibly get above 122.2 when you sell and that would be recorded as a buy! Try to check the price you pay or sell compare to the mid-price next time then check the trade report and you'll see it for yourself.
