According to the data of the State Oil and Gas Agency for eight months of 2021, Georgia has extracted 26,000 tons of crude oil and 14 million cubic meters of gas. In 2020, the total annual production was 30,000 tons of crude oil and 10 million cubic meters of gas.
Compared to the data for the first eight months of 2020, oil production has increased by 36 percent this year.
According to the agency, oil exploration and extraction activities in Georgia are carried out by 11 investor companies selected through international tenders on the basis of 25 agreements on the distribution of products with the state.
"Significant increase in extraction was caused by the modern method of work carried out by oil companies, in particular: horizontal, ultra-short radius drilling, three-dimensional seismic exploration and magneto-geophysical surveys. As a result of the commissioning of the renewed wells, significant prospects have been identified for increasing oil and gas production in the western Rustavi field and in the neighboring fields (Samgori-Patardzeuli, Teleti), where similar works are already planned in previously drilled wells.
It should be noted that the oil extracted in Georgia will be processed entirely on the spot, in two oil refineries. In 2020, a total of 28,437 tons of oil were refined. According to the data of the three quarters of 2021, 28,932 tons of oil are refined, which is much higher than the data of the three quarters of 2020 (19,000 tons of oil). "Accordingly, we can say that oil refining has increased by 47 percent," said the State Oil and Gas Agency.
