Rightly or wrongly it looks like they have chosen to evolve at this stage using an existing model...The fuel cell X5 will use the drive train from iX3 - quote 'This week BMW unveiled its first new all-electric model since quite a long time ago, the BMW iX3, which happens to be also the first with BMW's 5th generation drivetrain, the first electric X3 (and X in general). Additionally, the X3 is the first BMW that will be available as ICE, PHEV and BEV.' I have a diesel X6 which is a brilliant car and no doubt this fuel cell X5 will be also.

The BMW X5 FC will combine the drive train from an existing BMW ev model with the fuel cell technology from Toyota - a good template for other manufacturers. 374 BHP so should be a high performance beast as well as low emissions unlike the Mirai which is a lot slower.

BMW X5 fuel cell coming out next year - will be interesting how they price it vs all electric X5. Volume production should lower prices idc. Hybrid battery/fc seems the best option while we wait for more h2 refuelling stations.

Designed from the ground up Hesla would be significantly cheaper. Very soon Magna or equivalent will announce a battery/fuel cell hybrid powertrain platform that can be used in multiple different car and small commercial vehicle platforms - the already well established skate board concept. At a stroke the range anxiety and lack of h2 refuelling stations will be resolved. Magna already builds complete BMW, Land Rover etc models and can provide massive economies of scale especially in the electric motor era where high performance complex engine design is no longer a unique selling point for premium cars. Citroën, Ford etc are already selling +300hp electric SUVs that can compete on performance with premium brands. Put a hybrid fuel cell/battery power train into the mix and then you have an advantage over pure battery or fuel cell cars and vans. Watch this space.

My car tax is high band so £2,245 tax on registration plus a £335 tax surcharge for first 5 years total £3,920. If this was effectively refunded in the form of a green car grant towards an equivalent car like the Mirai that would kick start the transition to fuel cell cars. Just fining drivers for buying large cars is not helping the climate crisis at all.

Sorry should read heavy road tax charges (not subsidies) to pay for green car grants to incentivise buyers of H2 cars like the Hyundai fcv and Toyota Mirai.
