Thanks Toneman. I have returned to UK now but had a great 11 yrs of mountain living and travelling. You only get one shot at it and working till you drop is fine for some but not for me. You can't beat freedom to do anything anytime imho.

Has cropped up a couple of times recently. Not sure what normal retirement age is anymore but if you take state pension age as 66 and average male life expectancy in UK as 79 you will be 83% used up at that point with 17% left. Battery degradation at end of life probably gives you about half that as reasonably serviceable so about 6.5 yrs of reasonably healthy retirement followed by possibly 6.5 years of ill health. That is why I took early retirement plus my list of friends and colleagues who never made it to retirement age at all had grown to 20 names. I also worked out I was working for HMRC till Aug each year with double taxation (income tax and then 40% IHT above the threshold). Sold the house and moved into the ski apartment - daily mountain hiking in summer and skiing in winter. Much healthier than the daily commute to work! GLA

There is an analogy between honey and green hydrogen production. There are now C274,000 beehives in UK - globally many times that of course. The cellular nature of beehives permits virtually limitless replication and production of honey and the same is true of electrolysers and hydrogen. We are just in the very early stages now and at the bottom of the demand curve for green hydrogen. The demand will grow exponentially in this century and in parallel so will the need for electrolysers. A real honey-pot for investors without doubt!

LTH with 5-15 year outlook. By then the hydrogen infrastructure should be reasonably well established across all potential markets and the climate change drivers will be delivering irresistible pressure for transition to the hydrogen economy.

You are right Toneman. Expecting instant change is unrealistic - by 2050 though the market share will be very different as with the proportion of electricity generated by wind now compared to 29 years ago. Evolution takes time but it is coming. H2 will be ubiquitous in the long term as any Asimov follower will instinctively know.

Security threat costs also ignored/underestimated - not forgetting that the Clapham PC in the murder case started working for the Police in nuclear security - vetting is never foolproof. The security risks of a wind farm or solar are negligible by comparison.

The APPG on Hydrogen’s latest report urges the Government to move quickly on hydrogen and set ambitious policies to unlock investment, create employment opportunities and support the UK’s net-zero targets.

The APPG on Hydrogen’s report, developed as part of its inquiry into ‘How the UK’s hydrogen sector can help support the UK’s economic recovery’, sets out 15 recommendations to support and accelerate the growth of the UK’s hydrogen sector.

These include:

Developing a cross-departmental hydrogen strategy between Government and industry
Using regulatory levers to unlock private sector investment required, including amending the GSMR and expanding the remit of the Bus Service Operator Grant

Delivering funding models to create investment and economic jobs directly to the UK
Implementing measures similar to Offshore Wind, such as Contracts for Difference to incentivise industry and scale-up a hydrogen economy
