Sodium ion - lower energy density cf lithium ion.

For same energy storage you need a larger (heavier) battery compared to lithium. Fine for static systems but for vehicles? (Perhaps cheap and cheerful vehicles, say city roundabouts.)

Sodium is CHEAP. $1.4bn investment is a lorra lorra money - and CATL have sodium ion tech too - but how much is being/has been invested in Lithium battery production?

COEXISTENCE.

I keep an eye on tech developments: NEXT WEEK there will be another breakthrough/game-changer/disruptor…

We’ve been through the arguments for sodium.

Na batteries will have their place - alongside well-established Li.

Parliament is back in session next month. Allegedly.

Remains to be seen how many will turn up.

If Assore were to offer 33p right now - before the next parliamentary session - I’m sure many would be sorely tempted! (myself included)

I’d be interested to know how increasing the number of Li batteries deployed makes them more hazardous? ;)

Unless the quality of the deployment is going down, the likelihood of a fire surely remains the same?

Of course, the more deployments there are then the number of incidents are likely to increase…

Which, if not already, will surely be factored into the cost and contractuals of Li battery storage - and improved design (to manage/minimise impact).

Nevertheless the incidents highlight the superiority of IES’s product compared to Li. :)

If they are right that means the uptick is going to be from 2026 onwards - I think they say 27/28?

That would be good for ALL timing (assuming ratification this year, the election doesn’t upset things…)

Recent inflation and higher (though long term average) interest rates, removal of government subsidies in places have dampened consumer enthusiasm (simple economics of personal budgets will drive it - need the Chinese level of pricing…) - and as we approach 2030 then what will be the value of ICE cars?

Back to demand… battery storage definitely growing - but this is where alternative elements/types of battery will be the greater threat to lithium (eg need to worry about weight).

But what do I know - I bought ALL when it was higher…

I’d say buying XTwitter was the most expensive joke ever.

Cyfalafwr, Tesla’s Powerwall is still available. - cheaper battery storage options are too. Their commercial battery storage business (Li based) is doing incredibly well at $403m in Q1 this year and has deployed double the amount of storage in Q2 as it did in Q1… $6B revenue in 2024 from energy storage business alone.

Plenty of alternatives to Li for storage being developed/deployed (see Vanadium flow batteries) - though Lithium batteries for micro/domestic is the most accessible for consumers.

I’d add, that I don’t think China are doing it out of the goodness of their heart re: the environment. It’s economics and what’s in their best interests long term.

Hydrogen vehicles? If you think consumers are resisting BEVs then HEVs are not even on their radar. If range anxiety still exists then getting to the UK’s 11 hydrogen fuel stations sounds range-inducing-apoplexy.

I look at China: they’ve taken the long-term, strategic view.

Yep lithium prices are low (though derided, GS got it spot on for this year - and predict the same for next).

Africa is risky. We all knew this, didn’t we?

Lithium hyped? Short term, obviously yes.

Long term: it’s now simply the direction of travel.

The share price isn’t up 8% as far as I can see; rather it’s teetering.

How low could it go? If no rat next session then Ghana will be heading into election mode. Then nothing will happen until sometime next year - the major unknown being who forms the majority. I could see Assore swooping in with a lower bid given that uncertainty.

The positive, of course, would be rat next session and ALL can issue news on whatever they’ve had to hold back…

Perhaps like sodium there could be cheaper/cheerful potassium batteries for a two-tier-kia (sorry, couldn’t resist), I mean cars: low-end, small, city runabouts with smaller/heavier potassium (or sodium) batteries and lithium is for larger/high-end vehicles for those that want/can afford the range/prestige/own their own car, etc.

Lithium has decades of research and investment behind it of course so any disruptor material/tech has a bigger barrier - but who can say… (eg Betamax v VHS)

Let’s all calm down.
