if you have a brain you’ll be able to interpret the data presented here and notice that what increase there is in undergraduates is largely due to an expansion of subjects taught - mainly science and engineering - rather than the so called dilution of standards as claimed by oaps on here. please also note that modern history undergraduate numbers went down.

again. undergraduates and postgraduates are different. there are many more postgraduates these days because of changes to tertiary education funding but that is not what’s being discussed. in my post stating ‘5 places per year per college’ i was talking about undergraduate places, in response to the original, rather by the octogenarian chatgpt addict.

If you apply to do a law degree or medicine, or modern history or maths and computation or English or modern languages at an Oxford college, there will be typically be 5 or 6 places per year per college. That number is the same in 2025 as it was in 1965. The main difference now is that there’s more applications from abroad, they let in women, and you can’t just get a place anymore because you went to St Paul’s or Eton. Ergo, it’s tougher to get in.
