Mouthwashes could mitigate COVID-19....26 Apr 2021 13:05
It's back again...this is from today's Times - "specific mouthwashes, or even saltwater rinsing to reduce gingival inflammation, could help decrease the virus’s concentration in saliva and help mitigate the development of lung disease and reduce the risk of deterioration to severe Covid-19.”

"Coronavirus may spread into the bloodstream through infected gums, scientists have speculated, in a hypothesis that could explain why those with worse oral hygiene appear to be more susceptible to severe disease.
If true, the claims imply that the use of sterilising mouthwashes could lower the risk of serious infection.
The hypothesis was made in a paper published in the Journal of Oral Medicine and Dental Research after researchers noted that scans of patients showed no inflammation in the airways yet severe infection in the lungs.
The scientists suggested it was possible that the infection was travelling to the lungs through the bloodstream, having gained entry through the gums. Studies have established that people with poor oral hygiene have a greater risk of severe Covid-19.
Iain Chapple, professor of periodontology at the University of Birmingham, said this could be an explanation, although more research was needed to prove the link.
“This model may help us understand why some individuals develop Covid-19 lung disease and others do not . . . gum disease makes the gums leakier, allowing micro-organisms to enter into the blood. Simple measures, such as careful toothbrushing and interdental brushing to reduce plaque build-up, along with specific mouthwashes, or even saltwater rinsing to reduce gingival inflammation, could help decrease the virus’s concentration in saliva and help mitigate the development of lung disease and reduce the risk of deterioration to severe Covid-19.”
