If I lose 50 dollars and then get the 50 dollars back I am made whole, yes, by the exact same monetary amount in cash terms
No so in % terms: if I start with 100 and lose 50 that is 50 per cent loss and needs a 100% gain to make me whole.
The flip side is also true. Start with 50, get to 100 make a 100% return in year 1. In year 2 go back to where you started - 50 but as if by magic over the 24 month duration through the powers of percentages you made a 50% gain!

Year 1: 50 to 100 a gain of 100%
Year 2: 100 to 50, a loss of 50%
Net result over the period: 100% less 50% = 50% gain
Cash terms: NIL.

That`s true but makes all of the November "will they won`t they sign etc." all look a bit silly, talk about a damp squib.
