Trials for mass-testing begin
Everyone living or working in Liverpool will be offered a Covid-19 test â whether they are ill or not â in the UKâs first trial for mass-testing. Some residents of the city, which has experienced one of the highest Covid-19 death tolls in the UK, will be given tests that produce results within an hour: an important development in the governmentâs plans to make mass testing a viable alternative to exiting a cycle of local and national lockdowns, especially if a vaccine isnât delivered next spring.
As James Forsyth explains on Coffee House, it has become clear that mass testing is what the government is relying on to prevent a third lockdown, something that would see the patience of Tory MPsâ snap. But given the Test and Trace system was meant to help prevent a second lockdown, there is understandable scepticism about this plan. Thatâs why all eyes will be on the Liverpool trial: if the city is able to distribute, collect and process hundreds of thousands of tests with relative ease, it will boost hope that the governmentâs ambitious plan of issuing âmillionsâ of 15-minute tests, according to the Times, to the wider population before Christmas. But if it struggles, hopes for the rest of the year â and Englandâs timeline to leave its second national lockdown â will be further cast into doubt.â
