As you'd expect, as time increase their tests become more useful. Avacta's tests are likely the opposite, we can spot infection early with high viral loads and might struggle as the virus progresses through the body.

Fits like a glove? Mass screening with Avacta followed up by isolation and Roche testing.

As we learn more about the levels of scrutiny to get approvals, I'm increasingly confident that approvals won't be an issue and that Avacta will play a hugely critical role in getting out of this nightmare

The Horizon doc highlighted the dangers of rushing out a vaccine. I'm certainly not anti-vax but I'll definitely not be first in a queue for a Covid jab. Decent testing (Avacta anyone?) will hopefully help the world isolate effectively and reduce the pressure on rushing vaccine development to the point it might be dangerous. Given the wide range of symptoms it's clear this nasty virus isn't anything like a flu strain we've encountered before

That would be my guess, I think the order of events will be a partner for neutralising therapy, then BAMS then the LFD. Should be a cracking few weeks. And who knows, Sir Al does like to release the odd surprise transformational RNS

The part I’m wrangling with is the sampling. If you select 1000 in a hospital setting at varying points in their infection then our sensitivity might not look so great. If you sampled 1000 that had recently caught it with high viral loads in the throat i.e. when you’d want to use our test, there’s a fair chance we’d get 100%.

So you can have a range of viral loads and the virus also moves through the body as it progresses not forgetting the host might be asymptomatic. How on earth do you actually get to knowing the true sensitivity when validating? Genuine question to understand how are they going to come up with the magic number that will make or break the test. If anyone has a link to the methodology I’m keen to learn.

We’ve all read about problems with sampling for the gold standard of PCR, would our simple to use test therefore be comparable even at a lower sensitivity purely due to its ease of use?

As noted 80% is our starting point for the FDA, Quidel think they can get to 90% so the benchmarks have been set.

I agree, huge initial demand then it’ll subside with some obvious core testing areas that will continue. That sounds like a negative... But, and it’s a big un, it’ll put Avacta centre stage and they’ll have the revenues to fund their other valuable efforts.

I just watched the Horizon programme on the beeb. They mentioned the high viral load during the first 5 days, this is also likely to be before symptoms appear. That sounds perfect for a home test where you’d want to catch the virus early and stop transmission. However, you’d be reliant on the population testing themselves when they don’t necessarily have symptoms. I wouldn’t be surprised if the first order was from the govt for full national testing to kick start track and trace.

The reason we’re seeing the number of cases falling is because we’ve been locked in our houses and staying 2m away from each other. If you fancy that ad infinitum then yeah, there’s little point in testing if if doesn’t spread. As it has managed to circulate during lockdown, I’m sure we’ll see the weakened boundaries pushed too far and the r0 value rising again.

There is a genuine need for mass screening, be that now whilst the picture is looking (unrealistically) rosier, in a month or two when we’ll probably be back in the sh’t or in 6 months time when everyone wants to get back to a genuine normal where they can go to the match, go on flights etc rather than a socially distanced new normal.

Not concerned in the slightest for Avacta, it’s spreading ferociously elsewhere in the world which is a concern for those countries that are struggling to contain it
