I’d guess that performance was the reason, whilst they’re now giving approvals to antigen tests, they’re still measuring them directly against PCR. The U.K. govt is a lot more forward (Michael Mina) thinking in placing the importance on the infectious period. In other words, the U.K. are interested in a tool to help break transmission chains which is what is needed, rather than a pure diagnostic.

I can’t fathom the FDA saying it’s not a priority. Makes Sir Al’s decision to work with the U.K. govt a much better route to market, as he has said it’s plenty big enough. Feel sorry for any Sona holders, that’s a shocker

As the few weeks roll by, weirdly I’m more comfortable. The close links to the govt make this a when not an if. It won’t matter if TT is completed this month or next. The govt infrastructure for validation is now in place and it’ll be swiftly followed by huge orders. I agree with the poster that suggested that Asia Pacific could become a stop gap for the U.K., providing some time to increase production in the U.K. David Wilson suggested the govt are involved in procuring the machinery for expansion, there is a call to arms that’s similar to the clamour for ventilators. It’s obvious they see LFDs as the solution.

Once the U.K. is set up, we’ll then have spare capacity via Asia Pacific and possibly other OEM deals. 100m == £1bn revenue per month might just be the start.

Whoops, missed that in the OP, sorry Timster. Yeah, not an issue. In fact, if there was a significant mutation that resulted in all tests needing to be redeveloped I expect we'd steal a march thanks to the work so far and the speed of developing affimers.

I read that article this morning, interesting that the strain circulating now is a different one to earlier in the year. Obviously not much is known about the difference this time yet, but the previous mutation resulted in it being more easily spread. BAMS RUO will hopefully help.
