I remember Klaus, miserable sod and thinking it wasn’t even possible. I thought anything over 80/90 would be good enough. Then the presentation saying 95/98 is the standard to aim for. Gulp.

Then today... 98/99 up to 31. With an easier, more consistent sample. Wow. Wow. Wow!

Well, we know what he’ll say. 99% specificity isn’t good enough, false positive blah blah. You get anomalies and it’s a shame we missed 1 of 100, but we’ll find out the true figure once it’s in the wild. Hopefully he’ll keep his flaps shut as we’ll be selling in to Europe anyway.

All positive LFD results are supposed to be validated by PCR. This provides the opportunity to further determine the exact variant. So I’d expect he’s referring to a lab based test. All dependent on the LFD picking up the variants in the first place of course and that’s why the govt have this as a stage in their assessment

I'm looking forward to a box arriving through my letterbox without Made In China written on the side. Especially if it's a test that only needs a quick swirl in the front of my nose rather than the current test that needs me to tickle my tonsils and shove it uncomfortably up my nose. In fact, I'll be ordering lots of them. The govt will love me for being so responsible. I think I might test myself and everyone I've ever met every 30 mins or so, just to be on the safe side. I trust everyone else invested will be doing the same :-) I'm sure there'll be plenty demand. Plus the rest of the planet, best not forget them.

As for the tender, there are a few trying their luck. The latest Q&A doc included quite a few asking how to enter the information for their foreign test. There was even a question from a start up importer who would fail the financial checks. When there's £8bn lying around, it's not surprising every man and his dog fancies a go. It wouldn't be a surprise to hear of delays at the govt end. Not that we'll ever know... NDAs and all that.
