RoleKing, the delays are not being caused by PHE. They cannot build a DMG on Protos until other facilities are also under way. Everything on the Protos Plastic Park is running away behind, not just the PHE project. They all have to work together.
Why cancelled? Delayed perhaps, but why cancelled? The building has been prepared for it and the thermal chamber is in manufacture and almost complete. Cancellation at this stage would make no sense at all.
PHE can't build a DMG unit at Protos in isolation. Although the idea of the Plastic Park is a great concept with a jigsaw of facilities each feeding into another, this is also a drawback at the construction and installation stage because it all has to come together, like little ducks lining up. The plastic recycling facility that I believe PHE were expecting to get their feedstock from hasn't even got funding yet, and was supposed to be operational in summer 2022. And no off-take for hydrogen as the hydrogen refuelling station for HGVs that Peel was expecting to install at Protos hasn't materialised, and may not be seen for some time, if ever. So there really isn't anything that PHE can do at Protos on its own, until the other facilities get organised.
This has come out of the blue, and bear in mind that Keith was up for re-election at the AGM, now withdrawn at the last moment. Given that Keith is now in his mid-70s TBH I am more concerned about Keith on this occasion than I am about PHE.
I think Protos is "on ice" for the moment, and it's not just the construction of PHE's DMG facility that's being delayed over there. Enviroo had hoped to be operational by the summer of 2022, still looking for funding I believe.
Thanks Plantad for the update. That's the Covanta site, now renamed Encyclis. A waste to energy incinerator I believe, which will generate 49MW of electricity. Due to become operational next year (2024).
No connection to PHE's DMG of course, but good to see that something is happening on the Protos Plastic Park.
The Covanta (now named Encyclis) energy from waste facility (incinerator) on Plot 8 is due to become operational next year, but that’s the only facility that I’m aware of that is currently under development.
Does anyone know what, if anything, is going on at the Protos Plastic Park these days? Is there anything happening on any of the sites apart from Covanta? Enviroo was supposed to be operational about the middle of 2022 but as far as I know there has been no site development an no updates. There were plans for several plastics sorting and recycling facilities but I’ve seen no indications of anything being started. Or am I just missing all the action?
It doesn't really matter where the FOAK is installed, wherever it is it will benefit all of the other potential sites by its very existence!
But I still think it is likely to be at Protos. My main concern is as RoleKing says, as yet there are no facilities at Protos to supply the plastic feedstock, and I'm sure they don't want to truck it in from elsewhere. Looking at the plans of the Protos site, I think the main supplier of the plastic feedstock would be Enviroo who had intended to have their facility operational in 2022, but no sign of any start being made yet. Perhaps their facility and PHE's facility needs to be built at the same time?
As far as the hydrogen refuelling station at Protos is concerned, my feeling is that that is quite some way off still. However, I would hope that there are at least a couple of options available to PHE: First, surely there will other offsite opportunities to sell the hydrogen, perhaps to Element2 who has an MOU with PHE, or secondly to sell the syngas or electricity until such time that the on-0sit hydrogen re-fuelling station materialises.
Anyway, I live in hope that we will hear some good news about Protos and/or about the FOAK in the not-too-distant future!
