Old Oak obviously has never built anything and his head is well and truly in the clouds with this one. None of the portfolio is close to break even. Liberation labs is a just marginal break even pilot plant and needs to scale x 7 to become commercial. The portfolio is progressing on a mix of government grants and soft loans, which I can accept as an inevitable lack of long term vc commitment. That is why the US DOD bio security grants, which Oak had never even heard of, is the lifeline they all need. Alternatively a JV with a global food producer who will fund the capex. There is plenty of value here but it is nowhere near the rosie picture Oak presents. The first one to produce meaningful revenue will be Tropic Biosciences, which isn’t even on Oaks radar.

Spud I get that, you didn’t understand my post. The current oral trial in the US, note Poolbeg is not alone in this space, is finding it hard to get the numbers. Poolbeg is likely to have similar issues.

There is an oral phase 2 cytokine trial registered in the US with a 4 year timeframe. They have trouble getting volunteers because they all want intravenous.. It certainly isn’t going to be 2 months.

The patent is necessary but worth very little until a successful phase 2, then it should be worth more. Patents with only a phase 1 are plentiful and most prove worthless. The phase 2 would take a number of years.

Moneybird this is rubbish, the company has been going for many years, the first contracts are not delivering the free cash flow they should years down the track because they were priced too low and costs went up. Many jobs later it is now a 2026 cash flow break even. I accept mistakes were made and hopefully now not repeated and current and future contracts will eventually deliver the profits promised. Technically brilliant and not a blood sucking management you often see on AIM, I’ll keep supporting because I want them to succeed, but let’s not sugar coat or buy management’s spin on the past performance.

The portfolio pretty much runs itself as ANIC can’t fund further. What’s going to drive this is nothing much Shellbay do, it is on the capital scale up funding within the portfolio, where some are reasonably well placed to progress.

The much heralded last campaign resulted in a significant negative share price movement. There is actually no-one different running the show as the new CEO has been closely linked with Mellon for years and onlyseems to be there to protect his personal interests. The portfolio companies are doing their own talking and have good press coverage.It wouldn’t take 3 months to aggregate it and put a notice out. I actually don’t know why they have an analyst, Mellon will use the remaining cash to shore up where he has private equity.

In these cases I love too be proven wrong, but lack of any recent deal promotion, hiring freeze/ layoffs, going concern questioned on Glassdoor could be in part weaning off the VC nipple, but points to something more fundamental IMO. Fingers crossed they are doing a Klarna and replacing the back office with AI, but I think the fintech space is too crowded and the attrition will not be pretty.

I think a few in trouble Steph. Form3 is one I see in the steepest decline, IMO plenty not showing strong enough growth, but can’t comment on the last 2 fund acquisitions, have no real idea and in any case I wouldn’t have thought it justified the last few weeks sell off.

I reckon Marshall Wace are the only ones that played this right so far. They increased their short again so you may have some more of those paper losses you don’t worry about Landowner. I see a likely Fitch downgrade coming for you not to worry about as well, along with the start of abandon ship from the board. I used to think that about quorn which has been building market share for 50 years on biomass fermentation, but ramps up profit now on taste and price once they scaled up. I see meat and fish as an ingredient only for some time and most will run out of money. Luckily Mellon is not running any of the companies and most are ingredients only so it is up to them to succeed. Every global food producer is now JVd with one or more companies so many juniors are not completely on their own. As for precision fermentation, you are already consuming the output and have been for years whether you know it or not.

By generally referencing tech food startups and then narrowing it to meat the article presents a skewed view of the momentum across the space. Just 3 of AGNIC stable for cheese, eggs and solein were funded more than the amount the author quotes for the whole of Europe. Capital costs are expensive, but some of the pilot plants are large, not labs, so the scale up should be achievable. Some of the products are niche value add so don’t need foodstuff size scale up to be profitable, such as medical cotton or use in cosmetics.Meat and fish have regulatory as well as funding and scale up challenges and may not prove profitable , but the precision fermentation of products such as msg and amino acids has shown how incredibly profitable it can be.
