I use the train service quite a bit but I'm not sure that I would be so happy if I suspected that the crews were not fully trained? Still, the good thing about privatisation is that there is usually an alternative service so I will catch the bus instead. I would imagine that many will take the opportunity to work from home as seems to be the norm these days.
It's the same with Royal Mail. If their services are temporarily unavailable then there are a plethora of alternative services that will be happy to fill the void so it shouldn't be a biggie?

So, apparently Shapps has just worked out that the Government is not the employer of rail workers?
The Government are going to let the rail bosses and unions sort it out between themselves.
What happened to the standby workforce that they were going to arrange last week?

One of the newer entrants in my mail centre previously worked at our local Amazon depot which was built about four years ago. We thought that he would be amazed that we were still sorting parcels by hand, however he told us that although the Amazon depot did have conveyors, the "thinking process" was done by humans stationed next to the conveyors who were looking for a specific label colour and/or letters on the labels. If it wasn't their colour or letter then they let it go. Amazon's rationale was that expensive computerised conveyors are expensive and require an expensive trained maintenance team and spares whereas a basic conveyor staffed by minimum wage "robots" is more cost effective? Go figure?
There was me thinking that our local Amazon depot was staffed by about ten employees and some really trick conveyor system. Illusion shattered.....

The earliest date that any industrial action could be arranged for is the 26th of July which is coming into summer lapsing territory so it won't be having maximum impact on the business?
It is my belief that Thompson is happier to take on the union during the summer when parcel volumes will be lower plus the cost of living crisis will naturally lower parcel volumes anyway.
The union has the advantage of having a diverse membership in terms of geography, shifts and job description so if planned correctly there could be a ripple effect. Don't forget that the 90,000+ delivery posties can only deliver what's in the delivery office so if there's a log jam at the hub or mail centre due to lack of machine operators or there's an hgv driver shortage then the delivery posties would be turning up to an empty office in the morning whilst still getting paid.
As for IA being "priced in".....who knows? This stock is so perverse that I wouldn't be surprised to see it increase by 10% if strike dates were announced.....lol
Either way, it's going to be fascinating so buy popcorn and keep your wedge close to hand in case a decent buying opportunity arises.

You have an excellent point there. Perhaps it's time to look at pay differently? I'm no financial advisor but perhaps pay increases should be capped at 5% with companies offering one off payments or short term allowances to help with rising utility bills until the situation subsides and perhaps this could be governed by the RPI?
What is currently on the table is 2% plus a one off payment of £200. This would equate to around £10 per week for most employees which isn't even going to cover the additional fuel needed to get to the office.

Scampthedog, I suspect that the software/robotic issues with the new machinery are a short term blip and the manufacturer will sort this out soon.
Are the parcel volumes down to a general decline or are local mail centres with parcel machines holding onto their parcel volumes for self preservation?

The union(s) ballot successfully, the SP (possibly) drops, if it does then you lucky boys and girls get to load up on the cheap, Kretinsky does the same, becomes a majority shareholder and sacks the workforce then employs 75,000 workers on £9.50 an hour to do the work. The business makes huge profits, productivity goes ballistic and you can all sell out for a fiver.
Does that work for you guys and gals?

It looks like it's been a busy day in this forum but take away the personal spats and the rehashing of old stories and there isn't much left really but the thing that stands out most is those on this forum who know full well the story of RM and also the union(s) yet still invest in RMG and then whine like *****es when the unionised workforce (which they already knew about) have a collective bargaining issue with the BoD.
My message is, please stop self harming yourselves as it's not healthy.
My advice is, do your own research and find a nice non unionised company to invest in.

Maximus, nobody is standing in the way of staff leaving the business? The issue is that the overwhelming majority of RM employees are happy to work for RM but not happy to have to work for what is effectively less than last year. I don't really like to bring politics into this but part of the problem lies at the doorstep of 11 Downing Street and also Threadneedle Street who have made a complete hash if to situation.

New entrants are always welcome however RM are stuck with an ageing workforce partly because the next generation don't want to do the job.... they would rather be Xbox gamers or YouTubers or "social influencers".... whatever that means....

casperdog, if you had held RMG shares since October 2013 then you would have earned around 190p per share in dividend payments by my reckoning so far.

Newdealz, don't worry as the SP will drop by more than 13.3p in order to compensate for the dividend payment...

Peakybinder, mike1974, if you're that concerned about the amount of dead wood in the RM UK operation then may I suggest that you get off your backside and email the CEO (simon.d.thompson@royalmail.com or ceo.office@royalmail.com) to let him know your feelings as a shareholder.
Alternatively, apply to join the 140,000+ workforce and show them how the job should be done.....
