Independent rail planning consultant William Barter explained that the loss of the Golborne spur would limit the number of trains able to run between London, Birmingham and Scotland. It would also hamper other routes to Scotland, including freight, by clogging up the WCML.
He said: “If this section of the main line is simply being cancelled, it leaves all trains between London and Scotland, and Birmingham and Scotland, being routed onto the WCML at Crewe, and thus travelling north on the conventional WCML. This route involves the very restrictive two-track section from Winsford – Weaver Junction (where the line to Liverpool diverges).
“The HS2 train service specification has two trains per hour from Euston and two trains per hour from Birmingham. If HS2 trains are forced to use this route, I doubt if the second Euston train in the hour could be accommodated, limiting the Euston to Scotland service to hourly, and failing to reap the full HS2 time savings.
