Afternoon all. Hopes rising about some form of settlement. The bravery and humanity of so many with much less than we have, puts us to shame.
Trading wise, I bought some NWG and LLOY yesterday and sold the NWG for a nice profit. Bought one share of Berkshire Hathaway with the proceeds as an investment. Sadly, it’s a Class B Share, not the Class A which are half a million each :)

O - yes, feeling fortunate on my trading yesterday.
As regards German energy policy and intellectuals like David Starkey, I’m reminded of another - Mike Tyson once saying “Everyone has a plan until they are punched in the mouth”. :)

T - China and India can of course choose their own path, but they need to be prepared to pay the consequences if they start propping up the Russian government. I do struggle to understand the logic/hypocrisy of sanctioning countries/organisations buying gas and oil from Russia, when Western Europe is continuing to do so (as they have no real alternative until weaned off).
It’s like the west asking developing countries not to chop down their forests or burn coal, when we already did that for hundreds of years.

Despite the result, I had a great day watching all the rugby in a pub with friends on Saturday, with plenty of food and drink thrown in. I really do count my blessings and feel fortunate given all the death and destruction in the world. Perhaps glimmers of hope in Ukraine for some form of peace? Fingers crossed for that.
Investment wise, this morning I’ve sold all my batches of BRWM for a 9% and 13% profit. Quite pleased - given they were nearly 30% down at one stage late last year. Need to consider the small trading batches of AAL, BHP, RIO, XOM and CVX I’m holding at a very small loss.

On the opening bell, Ive always known what the SP would be, or what I’m prepared to pay if I think it’s going to jump. However, have any of you set an order to buy a share on open at the market rate? Seems risky to me, as you don’t know if you end up paying over the odds.

T - indeed. The market is very weird. Not quite sure why, but despite selling LLOY and JD (both up 5-6% today!) I’m doing quite well these past two days, even though nothing has really changed.
As they say, the markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent. Fortunately I don’t short, unlike the chinese multi billion one on Nickle that’s closed the market this week. Whoever made that decision must be needing new underwear.

RR - there was a good article in the Telegraph today regarding their
“ ……..hopes of building mini nuclear power stations have taken a significant step forward after Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, asked government regulators to assess its designs.”
It’s seems from the article that the costs of producing electricity will be a lot cheaper than Hinckley. Could be a solid infrastructure investment.

PolyMetal and your binary outcome - again in the Telegraph, there was an article saying that the Chinese are ready to swoop in and help the Russians by investing in their mining and energy stocks. So, you might have a better than 50/50 chance. ATB.

Late Friday, after serious consideration and reading up (I concluded the Ukraine war could drag on the rest of the year and lead to an even more rapid inflation). I closed my trading positions on LLOY, ABF,BRBY all at a loss. They’ve dropped further since. I bought some AAL, RIO and BHP (all up).

Investment wise I bought more BRWM adding to the only thing in my pf showing a profit. My pf is continuing to be hit every day as my funds that invest in U.K. mid and small caps are being thrashed.

Telegraph Fantasy Fund wise - into the third week I’m 68th out of 9,000 and almost 12% up. Been swapping in and out of major mining stocks, smaller precious metal miners, BRWM, BA, Shell and HBR. If only it were real!

Agree with your sentiments guys. Some interesting articles over the past few days on Russia.
The pressure will definitely be on him when the Moscow stock exchange reopens (Wednesday? If Putin is brave enough to allow it). It’s when most of the middle class will have years of all their investments wiped out.
In the past he could blame it entirely on the Capitalist west and the people might have believed it, but I think the younger generation are a lot more sophisticated in their sources of information and thinking. Albeit, most of the public are terrified of speaking out.

The psychopathic Putin seems intent on destroying Ukraine whatever the cost to the Ukrainians, or his people and their savings. He’s probably delighting in ramping up the west’s inflation rate.

I don’t see a satisfactory conclusion with any scenario,nbe that: total/partial victory, total/partial withdrawal (all with or without Ukrainian government/puppet government approval)

I can’t see the west letting him off the hook in terms of lifting sanctions - they can’t let him get away with it, as it will encourage him to go after other countries. He’s not going to pay reparations.
The west (mainly NATO) will need to increase its military spending and try and wean itself off of Russian resources and consequently experience high inflation and in all likelihood cause a recession.

A bit closer to home - I just got a shock hearing about Shane Warne dying at the age of 52. Before he became truly famous he played cricket for the local cricket club (Imperial) during the summer 1989. He liked a drink even then.

O - I learned my lesson buying AVON on their massive drop - not to buy on the day. Having read more, I do agree with what you’ve said and the markets view about the business model proposed. Of course, if the government have their way, this could be the path the BBC might have to follow.
With regard to clothing SPs, when I used the eToro plotting/comparing chart tool - JD, M&S, Next and TED have all followed the same steep trajectory these past few months. One of the reasons I can’t trade too much is that I’m sat on a large 12% loss on JDSports in my trading account.

I’m just sitting tight again today.
I see Shell and BP are well up today. I’m guessing that the the amount of revenue they’ve “lost” on their Russian assets they may have to dispose of is more than being compensated by the increasing oil price.
I’m surprised we haven’t pressured Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to up their output.

Just checked in on my accounts. - All I can say is double ouch on all my holdings apart from BRWM. There’s nothing I can do in terms of trading against trend, and I don’t short.

You guys have been through far bigger stock market turmoil and declines than me when COVID broke, so you’re probably a bit more sanguine about it than me.

Enough of my moaning - I Hope you’re all doing ok.

My Russian EUA hammered yesterday.
However, BRWM doing well and my BRBY are up in profit (a bit)and my medium/small cap U.K. and ISPY funds are recovering some of their losses these past few months.

My ISPY cyber security fund has been making progress over the last few days (I’m still quite down as I bought at the top of the market last year).
It currently doesn’t have DarkTrace within the portfolio.

Hopefully, everyone will now take cyber security seriously given that Putin has taken his gloves off.

DJ - regarding PolyMetal - sorry to hear that, but take some comfort from me.
My speculative Russian mining stock - EUA recovered 50% today. (I’m still down 60%) and they produce virtually nothing. You’ve got a proper mining stock.

Morning all. Very sunny here in Bristol, so went out for some exercise.
Feeling a bit better with the partial recovery, sadly based on the very likely swift Russian victory without much redress. I can only hope that casualties are kept to as minimum as possible in the circumstances.
Agree with what you guys have said. If we are to draw a line in the sand, we’d better bolster NATOs conventional weapons in the Baltic States, Poland and the Balkans. Germany’s head of the armed forces doesn’t inspire me with confidence having said in effect his country is in the worse ever position to do anything as the governments strategy was based on Russia never invading anyone again. Can’t see them getting any additional funding with the Greens in the coalition. Annoyed that as someone said that Putin the psychopathic murderous bully will win. Wouldn’t it be ironic if someone poisoned him. with Polonium of Novichok.
