Hello all. Hope everyone is ok. Mild and wet in Bristol today.

T - fully agree with you. Unfortunately, half of my pf recovery over the past month or so has disappeared this week. This is as a result of its heavy weighting towards U.K. small and mid caps. What’s actually surprised me was their increase in the first place - all the bad news coming out this week was known or forecast months ago.
My mining and US trades holdings are still doing reasonably ok. I think any company trading in dollars might be a safer haven. However, I’m not going to swap out anything in my pf and crystallise my losses.

I’ve checked in on the bb the past few weeks, but haven’t had much to say trading wise. Overall Pf has done well apart from the back end of this week. My trades of Diageo, Google, Mastercard, Visa, are doing well - I’m holding all for now. My Newmont and Poly are still around 30%, GGP 30% and Ben 60% down. I can’t see them improving for a year
Pf wise, over the past few weeks, I’ve been drip feeding mining stocks on their drops small amounts at a time:BRWM, Anglo American, Rio, BHP and Glencore, and US Oil Stocks: Occidental, Chevron and Exxon.

Finally, I know some of you have in the past held CINE and DARK, so my sincere commiserations and congratulations go out to you.

Afternoon all. Thought I’d drop in and say hello and hope everyone is well.

My overall pf has recovered 10% in the past two weeks, but obviously still significantly down from the highs of May and September 2021 (in my case).

Trading wise - I did dip in and buy Google last week on their drop when they got dragged down by Snap’s results and am currently 6% up on those and my other recent buys of Diageo, Mastercard and Visa.
Still in a small loss with Chevron, Exxon, Barclays - but they are robust companies and will come good.
I’m holding a loss having bought Newmount on a broker recommendation that turned out to be @#£& as their results announced a few days later were poor due to a rise in operating costs.
Can’t see them recovering until POG increases.

I am already retired, but there was an interesting article in the WSJ a day or so ago, about how often Americans look at their future Retirement fund accounts called 401(k)

The more people look at their 401(k)s, the lower their long-term returns are likely to be, according to two landmark studies from behavioral economists Shlomo Benartzi and Richard Thaler. They found that investors with distant goals who resisted the temptation to monitor the market earned significantly higher profits over time than those who checked annually. Why? They were likely to invest more in stocks.
For the average person, the pain of losing is more powerful than the pleasure of gaining, behavioral economists say. This phenomenon is made even worse when people constantly check day-to-day movements of the market and lose sight of their long-term goals. Mr. Thaler and Mr. Benartzi call this “myopic loss aversion.”
The volatility of stocks also helps explain why peeking can be painful. Since 1929, the S&P 500 index has posted declines on 46% of days in which the markets were open, subjecting those who check their balances daily to lots of bad news. In contrast, those who looked at where they stood once a year saw losses only 25% of the time. Over 10-year periods, the odds of a loss were just 6%, according to BofA Global Research.

Afternoon all. Been doing some diy this morning. Just stopped for lunch and oh dear - see that my BEN has fallen another 30% today. Aargh. RNS released by the company say they know of no company specific reason for the share price movement. My 5% gain on Diageo has almost vanished too.

Morning all. Hope all is well, as I write this message nobody appears to have posted since I did on Friday.

In the interim, I’ve bought some more BRWM.

I’ve also bought some Visa and Mastercard. My thinking is that with high inflation their take of any transaction based on a fixed percentage will increase.

My BEN is doing badly - down 30% - the market didn’t take too kindly them spending a few million on a third mining machine as a backup/resilience. That said, the share price is now just below what the Non-Exec paid in May (£30k worth). I’m hoping they’ve bottomed out.

Afternoon all. I’ve been keeping my head down these past few weeks to avoid further despair!

T - ROKU like many of the NASDAQ are extremely volatile. I’ve been reading the Wall Street Journal every day for several months and am still none the wiser on anything over there.

What another dreadful week for me stock wise. One step forward, two or three back. Really regretting having so much in funds run by experts invested in UK small and medium companies. These alone have dropped a further ten percent over the last 3 weeks. The losses are now 40%. I will continue to hold for a few years in the hope they eventually recover.

C - my POLY is down 30%, but I’m going to hold.

I bought some small amounts of Newmont and DGE this week and are in slight profit.

I did put a small amount of new money into my stocks and shares ISA last week, and its just sitting there for now. Trading fund wise - It’s difficult to do any day trading against the backdrop of falling markets.
Im hoping the Fed and BoE decisions later this week are already baked in, else we are in for further steep declines.

I decided to take the plunge and do a trade - placed what I thought was an order on HL for some more BEN on their drop. I thought it had gone through, but on checking later it hadn’t and in the meantime the price went up 5%. I think I may have been distracted and the quote had timed out. So another week without any new trades!

T - I haven’t held MSFT for many weeks. (I will take a look at Stockwits) I do keep an eye on them on a daily basis. I think the next time I buy will be to add them to my investment pf. They generate loads of ongoing repeat business profit and cash in dollars (a double edged sword - dollar stronger than Sterling, but reduces their sales in the rest of the world). We’re you holding ROKU when they spiked 10% earlier this week? Fingers crossed that you did.

I should add that the overall pf is still down 20% from its high in May last year.

As regards Musk - me thinks his comments are about keeping his employees on their toes (including those working from home).

I’ve not opened any new trades for a while, as I’m waiting to see how the others are doing. After 2 months my BARC trade has finally broken even. My 2 BRWM and 2 of my 3 BEN are in small profit.
If I buy any more BRWM it will be for investing long term.
My pf is up over 5% over the past 2 weeks.

O - you have my sympathies. We decided not to fly anywhere for a while because of all the various difficulties. Hopefully in the autumn things will smooth out. Last time I drove in France (from Toulouse) was ten years ago, when staying at friends near Saint-Affrique. It cost £200 for a weeks car hire with full cover in a brand new C4 Diesel Turbo. How things have changed.

I’m crossing my fingers that my BEN have bottomed out today, having lost more than 10% in the last two weeks.

I’m Back from a nice relaxing week down in deepest Cornwall (Newlyn). I tried to forget about the market while away, but did read our bb and check my pf once each day. (Pf did well last week for a change!) Surprising really, as the fundamentals haven’t changed. I should go away more often.

Afternoon all. I am around and viewing our bb everyday, but feel a bit a a fraud not trading. Been decorating and allotmenting this week, but even if I weren’t I wouldn’t be doing any trading - given the markets of late. Shame I don’t short, as I think I’d profit in virtually everything.
As Jesse Livermore said “ Do not trade every day of every year. Trade only when the market is clearly bullish or bearish. Trade in the direction of the general market. If it’s rising you should be long, if it’s falling you should be short”

Afternoon all. Hope you had a decent bank holiday - I’ve finished the decorating today (well for now :))

C - I’m still holding POLY at a 17% loss. I’m holding it outside my ISA in case I lose the lot!
Regarding LLOY - there is very small percentage money to be made intra day trading the peaks and troughs. When I had more time - I used to do it and could make small amounts. I am a better “scalper” than investor! Back in September, I sold all my investment in LLOY for a 10% loss and did 15 buys and sells of LLOY over the month and made 10%. This wasn’t using any leverage or spread betting.

T & O - I’m not risking buying anything else at the moment. Almost everything I buy goes down. That said, some of my small/mid cap funds run by experts are down 30% from September - 10% down in the last month alone.

Just glad I sold all my US stocks when I did - they’re continuing their relentless decline give or take the odd day minor rise.

In retrospect (a year ago) I was too optimistic about things despite the warnings about inflation. I had assumed that COVID was on its way out and as a result supply chain issues would unwind. What I also didn’t realise was how inept the Chinese government was regarding vaccinating its people with a vaccine that worked - leading to rolling lockdowns. Of course the black swan event of war in Ukraine has exacerbated things further.

Well today’s minor rally didn’t last long, with most of my stuff in the red again. I’m getting really fed up!
I’m still decorating this week, but took a break yesterday afternoon and the opportunity to sell all my poorly performing US trades of AMZN, GOOGL, MSFT,INTL, BRK.B all sadly at a loss. My only comfort is that they’ve all dropped since. Regarding the remainder of my trades - my three holdings in BEN are overall in reasonable 5% profit. My BRWM are down a bit 4%, and BARC down 3%. Im holding them all for the foreseeable. I’ll keep the remaining funds in cash for the moment, because if I buy anything it will go down :)
