Morning all. I really must stop looking at my shares first thing in the morning. It makes for a depressing start. I should also stop looking late morning as it’s even worse! Here’s hoping people topping up their new ISAs will turn things around in two weeks.

T. Sorry to hear that, hopefully your dream to live partially in Tenerife will materialise soon. Ive eaten very good seafood there many a time.
o. I was looking at investment opportunities in growing meat, milk, cheese and protein from plants and yeasts yesterday. I didn’t realise that Quorn is owned by some company I’d never heard of in the Philippines. A lot of the companies involved are still at the s raising private capital stage at the mo. Are you aware of any companies at a value for money entry point?

I’ve always liked to spend a week in the Canaries during winter and spring. Nice and sunny and not too hot. It’s so relaxing. Haven’t considered buying there as we would never spend enough time there to make it worthwhile, and I wouldn’t want the hassle of renting it out. Unfortunately, the last time we were there this time last year we were in total lockdown 2 days into our weeks stay. Everything was closed and you weren’t alllowed to go out at all unless to go to the supermarket, bank, or pharmacy. The only saving grace was that we were staying in a really good villa with everything apart from a pool.

T. Still early days for me. I sort of describe myself as a frequent trader rather than day trader, and although I have bought and sold within days, I haven’t really done any same day stuff. I might dip my toe in with a small amount after things have calmed down. My main strategy so far is buy just before results time those companies that should have done well, then sale shortly after. The proviso being that said companies must prove a good medium to long term hold should the results disappoint. I’ve done reasonably ok so far. My more speculative short to mediums are about 10% down, but allegedly will return me more than 100% should they come to fruition. I suspect not!

T. Forgot to say, my partner tells me that ASOS clothing seems not quite on trend these days. I bought £5k of Boohoo yesterday as a medium to long hold for my ISA. One of the few not red today. No, my partner doesn’t buy anything from there either! But we are are both early 60s.

T and G. Agreed. Markets want certainty, at the moment risk is factored in on all the fronts mentioned including taxes. I don’t think one or two percent online tax will change behaviours when you cost in convenience, time, transportation costs when going to a physical shop. Room for both ways of consumption seeing as what shops and bars and restaurants physically standing will be fewer.

G. Yes, there’s a new date in everyone’s calendar now. Tax Day, the day the Chancellor announces plans/thoughts/ideas about future taxation policy. We shall see! I’m sure it wont be good news for us investors.

Afternoon all. Another poor day for the portfolio. Most of the competitors to the companies I hold are also red, so not taking it personally. Hoping the chancellor doesn’t upset the market too much with regard to CGT and pensions tax relief this afternoon.

T I had some problems yesterday with HL. I bought some share in Kingfisher yesterday and within minutes it was saying I was in profit by £500. Feeling very pleased with myself, I checked the sell share price and it was below what I paid. Within moments I was showing a true minor loss.
It’s a bad day at the office for my portfolio, so I’ve bought some small amounts on the dips.

o. Thanks for the advice. I’m slightly underwater with my recent purchases of AIM and Small Cap - some mainly due to the spread. Fortunately, they represent 5% of my portfolio. I might stick to the Footsie 350 :)

Good afternoon all. Hope you don’t mind me asking another question. I recognise that the difference between the buy and sell price of a share can be a reflection of liquidity and risk. But do any of you operate a rule of thumb with regard to avoiding buying shares on AIM or Small Cap where the USUAL spread is too big, eg 3% or 5%

Morning all. Good start to the day with 888s results. Bought earlier on Tuesday this week and just sold. Just wish I’d bought on Friday rather than dithering.

The land of the free, appear to be more like junkies after the next fix - demanding more and more from the Fed and Capitol Hill.

T. Your post was an amazing coincidence. I was going to pose the question about MM manipulating prices and whether it was true as a lot of people on these BBS seem to blame them when the share price doesn’t move the way they expect.

Hello all. Lovely morning, so went for a run. Despite my portfolio being a sea of red (well a light pink really) both before and after it isn’t ruining the day. Now, can I motivate myself to go to the allotment this afternoon?

S. I take the points you make. I may be underestimating the permanent change to society post covid. I’m hanging on to my Wetherspoons and ABF shares in the interim. If I invest a small amount in Parsley Box, can I blame you? :)
