alfacomp's analysis is bang on. i don't think it's going to be a case of National Grid aren't allowed to own battery storage for long. They need to in order to balance the system. As more coal / gas fired power stations close, and older nuclear ones decommissioned, we can already see the amount of wind farms being constructed, along with PV solar farms. Good news for the environment, but brings it's own problems for the Grid, in that distributed generation plays havoc with load/frequency balancing, so frequency correction has to be made, as the system has to run on a very tight limit to stop electronics going pop (+/- 1 hz). This would normally be done by forcing steam driven turbine generating sets to increase / decrease the rpm, so keeping the frequency in check. Unfortunately you can't tell the wind to blpw a bit harder, or the sun to shine a bit brighter. To maintain quality of supply, it will be a necessity to have storage facilities. There are already a small number in operation in the UK (Pelham, Blackburn Meadows, Breach Farm etc) but these are currently on DNO networks, so they are coming, slow but sure. All this means that the need for Vanadium is just going to increase. - as is my shareholding!
