One possible reason to buy back shares whilst a company is able to is simply to reduce the dividend cost. It thus makes future dividend payouts more sustainable, especially if the business might be expecting profit lowering in the future..at least they have a better chance of maintaining the current dividend yield that the institutional investors demand ( private investors too!).

Bob6... Whilst Divi of 80p is assured (as much as can be!) - dividends beyond this date will be governed by free cash flow. Dividends are priority 2 after investing in business. My translation is " here's a warning folks, expect a lower Divi and we will use the excuse that we're investing in the business".

It's bad news to pull a Divi...look what happened to the share price! It's more of an issue that they actually announced a Divi then culled it. The message was " we haven't a clue what we are doing and we have suddenly realised that we are in a pickle". Hence Crook HAD to go. If you look at any trading update...any mention of the word " uncertainty" and the market responds negatively!

The poster who got paid a Divi? This means he/she would have received the Divi from a ring fenced sum placed in the bank 5 days after declaration and to be paid within 30 days. As the money was never paid into the bank I don't know how they received a Divi... ?...?...? ( Are they sure they're not confused with PFC Petrofac which has just paid a Divi ?)

There might be a technical issue here. Judge. You used the word " declared" as opposed to " announced". I'm not entirely sure but a Divi is announced and then declared ( confirmed) at the AGM at which time it becomes a debt to be paid to investors. Clearly it is legal that PFG cancelled the interim ...it would have been challenged by now. Any legal eagles out there?

Interim dividend can be announced and withdrawn " at will" - as PFG did . Final divi withdrawal is a little more difficult but can happen. Example BP after the Deepwater incident.

I'm guessing that the recent Brighthomes fine hasn't helped. There is perhaps some read across to Vanquish ROP. The .GOV is worried about consumer debt and thus might seem to introduce new regulations to protect people. All that will happen is that this will force certain groups of people down the local loan shark route where there is little protection.

The interim dividend was announced but then cancelled. At the same time we were advised that a final Divi would also be unlikely. Todays fall is not associated with a supposed Divi which is non existent.

look what happened to AZN - 26 July 5113p down to 4325p (15%) and it was down more than this during the day. Current Sp = 5072p (0.8% down approx). Divi coming along on 10th Nov. It's a "do nothing" .

Course it's all scaremongering...it takes two to make a market. IRV have got the UK government backing...no point in debating it further...Interserve is not going bump!

He has a view, granted. He also probably has a short in IRV.

Qzqz...you mention that you don't intend to hold for that long. Is it a case of in and out for a swift profit? There's a ~32p quarterly dividend next week and the forecast ( digital look) is for a total of 140 pence Divi next year. I think that the current price is as good as it gets for the moment. Of course I might be wrong. I see indirect challenges arising..more people are shopping and Aldi/ Lidl and they tend to stock a lot of their own brands with similar packaging and names! Hence ulvr are busy disposing of certain elements of their business (eg spreads,) and buying new possibilities ( Carver in Korea). I want the SP to fall further so I can buy at a better yield ( I don't think I could be any clearer on my views). Whether this happens or not is anyone's guess. I've posted my views and tried to justify them as best I can. Of course, as they say DYOR.

Qzqz. I divulged below that ULVR was 1.8% of my portfolio. Thus, you might take it that I hold other shares ( plus one IT (HFEL)). I actually hold shares in 39 other companies. As for Unilever being shorted..not to any visible extent. Current visible shorting on ULVR is zero! You can check that out for yourself though here https://shorttracker.co.uk I'm not personally shorting ULVR ( or any other company for that matter). My message regarding ULVR is " good company, one of the UK/Dutch best, but a bit pricey at the moment, maybe wait til Xmas before topping up ones stocking". As for Unilever being a " dog of a share" I'd take a complete opposite view. If only a lot more companies were as good as Unilever. I'm surprised you have that view on ULVR, really surprised.

Pauly70. Which comments are you referring to? The " link" you provide is not there. Why PFG should compensate people now is not clear..the inquiry is still ongoing.

The work breakdown of new contract with the Beeb should be understood as it is a contract extension. Mrs White would be in dereliction of her duties if - based on the current contract - she knowingly accepted a contract that would likely be loss making... especially in current circumstances.
