There is a monitoring system that randomly checks customers who scan & pay. I’ve experienced it a few times. The staff come over and scan a few of your items at the self checkout to see if they have been scanned by the shopper. It’s a bit hit & miss and I’m sure easily manipulated.
When I was younger I used to feel sorry for the elderly shoplifter, but soon realised that they are just shoplifters who have grown old!
It’ll never stop- has to be factored into sales.
