"VOD though is weighted towards Germany though within their European area ..and so..is kind of linked to EU economic prospects ....if Germany falters then..what tends to happen is there is a domino effect leading out towards Spain, Italy ..etc"
The above could be argued about any major market, i.e. US, China etc.
In Germany, VOD plays a critical role in offering consumers a viable, solid, alternative to Deutsche Telekom. In fact, VOD is the only true global mobile player. People seem to have forgotten that it's THE brand synonymous to mobile services in many parts of the world. That's one unique strategic position to be in.
Also, and as a side note, in the African continent VOD evangelised the payments and transaction among individuals and small businesses though their mobile payment initiative raising the standard of living for many by bypassing intermediaries. Remember, due to poverty and lack of significant infrastructures, people had to travel for hours, if not days for even tiniest of transactions. That has lead to a positive feedback loop, one which will just keep growing in importance and impact.
VOD's biggest misstep, strategically speaking was when Calo decided to sell Verizon shares. A big mistake, which was enforced by greedy and ignorant institutional investors lest personal behind the scenes motives and incentives. That single move depreciated VOD's brand value and weakened its global and local power play options.
